Chapter 7 - THE HOUSE OF BELLANTI

The scandal became public.
Not everything.
Enough.
BELLANTI HEIRESS-TO-BE ARRESTED IN ALLEGED INCAPACITY SCHEME.
Nico hated the headlines.
Mostly because they called Vanessa an heiress-to-be.
Claire hated them because half focused on whether a disabled man could manage an organization.
As though injury itself were scandal.
At a press conference, Nico appeared in his wheelchair.
Not hiding it.
Not using it as tragedy.
He said:
“I sustained a spinal cord injury. I did not surrender my legal capacity.”
Then:
“People around me exploited assumptions about disability to make fraud easier.”
That sentence spread.
So did another.
“Needing assistance is not the same as needing permission.”
Claire watched from backstage.
That line was not in the prepared statement.
She smiled.
Later:
“You stole my sentence.”
“I improved it.”
“No.”
The Bellanti organization changed.
Not overnight.
Nico could not magically transform decades of shadow business into legitimacy in one week.
But investigations had exposed a structural problem.
Too much power concentrated in cousins.
Personal loyalty substituting for controls.
Nico began separating legitimate companies from criminal operations.
Independent compliance.
Outside governance.
He cooperated with authorities concerning Adrian’s financial misconduct and selected illegal business activities.
That cooperation came with consequences.
Fines.
Forfeitures.
Investigations into operations Nico had tolerated before his accident.
Claire did not let him call himself innocent.
He didn’t.
“That’s new,” she said once.
“What?”
“You’re not blaming Adrian for everything.”
“He didn’t create all of it.”
“Good.”
“Don’t sound so pleased.”
“I enjoy moral development.”
He rolled his eyes.
Adrian was eventually charged with conspiracy, fraud, attempted exploitation of a vulnerable adult, medication tampering-related offenses, and crimes connected to the vehicle sabotage investigation.
The crash case remained complicated.
But prosecutors found enough financial and communications evidence to allege deliberate tampering.
Vanessa faced charges tied to drug administration, fraud, coercion, and attempted financial exploitation.
Dr. Vale lost his license and faced criminal charges.
Vanessa’s father faced financial conspiracy charges after emails showed he had knowingly funded efforts to obtain control through Nico’s declared incapacity, though direct knowledge of poisoning remained disputed.
Lena testified.
Rachel testified.
Claire testified.
Thomas testified.
And Nico?
He testified too.
Adrian’s attorney asked:
“Mr. Bellanti, you have a history of violence and illegal activity, correct?”
Nico’s lawyer objected.
Nico answered anyway.
“Yes.”
The courtroom shifted.
The attorney smiled.
“So you expect the court to believe you are a victim?”
Nico looked at him.
“People who have done wrong can still have crimes committed against them.”
Silence.
That answer mattered.
Claire heard it later and thought:
Good.
No halo.
No fantasy innocence.
May you like
Just truth.
