Chapter 2 - THE MAN WHO WASN’T AS CONFUSED AS THEY THOUGHT

Claire returned to the estate at midnight.
Not through the main gate.
Thomas brought her through an old service entrance near the lakeside wall.
Nico waited in his study.
Alone.
No wheelchair.
He was sitting in a high-backed rehabilitation chair with leg braces locked beneath his trousers.
Claire stopped.
“You’re standing?”
“Not exactly.”
His mouth tightened.
“I’ve been able to bear partial weight for two weeks.”
“You didn’t tell anyone.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Same reason you didn’t tell anyone about the pills.”
Fair.
Claire entered.
Nico looked tired.
But his eyes were sharper than they had been in days.
“I stopped taking the medication you leave in the evening tray.”
“When?”
“Three nights ago.”
Her pulse jumped.
“And the episodes?”
“Reduced.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t know whether you were involved.”
Also fair.
He nodded toward the chair.
“Tonight Vanessa came in while she thought I was sedated.”
Claire waited.
“She called Adrian.”
“What did you hear?”
“Enough.”
Vanessa:
After Saturday, he signs.
Adrian:
He’s asking too many questions.
Vanessa:
Then increase it.
Claire felt cold.
Nico continued.
“She also said your name.”
“What?”
“Adrian told her you had already been handled.”
The planted bottle.
Claire sat.
“Rachel confirmed the pills were substituted.”
“Who is Rachel?”
“Toxicologist.”
Nico’s eyebrow lifted.
“You sent my medication to a toxicologist without telling me?”
“Yes.”
“That would normally annoy me.”
“You’re welcome.”
Something almost amused crossed his face.
Then vanished.
“What was in them?”
Claire told him.
His jaw tightened.
“Could that cause what’s been happening?”
“Yes.”
“All of it?”
“Maybe not all. Your sleep deprivation, pain, spinal injury, other medications—there are multiple factors.”
“But enough.”
“Yes.”
Nico stared at the floor.
“Vanessa gives me the evening pill sometimes.”
Claire nodded.
“She insisted she was helping.”
“She was.”
Just not in the way he thought.
Thomas entered carrying documents.
“Nico.”
He placed them on the desk.
“The proxy.”
Claire looked.
Bellanti Holdings Emergency Governance Authorization.
If signed by Nico and witnessed by two directors, temporary operational authority could transfer to Adrian during periods of “medical incapacity.”
The document lasted twelve months.
“Have you signed?”
“No.”
“Have they asked?”
“Repeatedly.”
Thomas continued.
“There’s also a trust amendment tied to the marriage.”
Nico laughed without humor.
“Of course.”
Vanessa would receive substantial beneficial rights after marriage.
Not instant ownership.
But enough.
Then Claire asked:
“The crash.”
Both men looked at her.
“What about it?”
“If they’ve been tampering with medication, why assume the crash was mechanical?”
Silence.
Nico’s face changed.
The official report said brake failure.
Vehicle destroyed after investigation.
Claire continued.
“Who handled the SUV after the crash?”
Thomas whispered:
“Adrian.”
Nico closed his eyes.
“That’s not proof.”
“No.”
Claire looked at him.
“But it’s a question.”
Nico leaned back.
“What do you want to do?”
Claire almost laughed.
“You’re asking me?”
“You found it.”
“Call police.”
Thomas looked nervous.
Nico stared at her.
“You understand what that means in this family?”
“Yes.”
“Do you?”
Claire leaned forward.
“I reported a doctor once.”
“Not the same.”
“He had power. I had none.”
She held his gaze.
“I learned one thing.”
“What?”
“If your truth requires permission from the person hurting you, you don’t have a system. You have a hostage situation.”
Thomas looked impressed.
Nico almost smiled.
Then he said:
“I don’t call police without evidence.”
“Good.”
Claire placed her phone on the desk.
“Then we build evidence.”
No threats.
No revenge.
No Bellanti men dragging anyone into basements.
Evidence.
Nico hated it.
Which meant it was probably correct.
The plan began.
Claire’s suspension would remain public.
Vanessa needed to believe she had won.
Thomas would quietly restore Claire’s access to medical records under consultant credentials.
Nico would continue pretending to take his evening medication.
The actual pills would be switched with safe physician-approved alternatives.
Every substituted tablet would be preserved.
Every delivery photographed.
Every administration logged.
A new independent physician would evaluate Nico without Vanessa or Adrian present.
And Nico would not sign anything.
Not even a dinner receipt if Claire had her way.
“I’m not incompetent.”
“Then stop signing documents when sedated.”
He glared.
“Bossy.”
“You hired me.”
“You’re suspended.”
“Then I’m volunteering.”
That irritated him more.
Good.
Before Claire left, Nico said:
“Your brother.”
She froze.
“What about him?”
“I heard Vanessa discussing your insurance.”
Claire’s blood ran cold.
“What?”
“She said once you’re terminated, your dependent coverage expires at the end of the month.”
Noah’s surgery.
Claire stood.
“How does she know about Noah?”
“My staffing records.”
“That’s confidential.”
“So are medical bottles.”
Fair.
Nico looked at Thomas.
“Move Noah onto Bellanti Foundation medical coverage.”
Claire snapped:
“No.”
Nico stared.
“What?”
“No favors.”
“He needs surgery.”
“I know.”
“You would rather—”
“I would rather not have someone buy the right to control me.”
Silence.
Nico’s expression changed.
Not insult.
Recognition.
Claire continued.
“If the coverage is a legitimate employment benefit I earned, fine.”
“You’re suspended.”
“Exactly.”
Nico thought.
Then:
“Consulting contract.”
“What?”
“Independent clinical safety consultant.”
Thomas almost smiled.
“Salary equal to nursing contract. Benefits included. Ninety-day term.”
Claire stared.
Nico shrugged.
“You wanted procedure.”
She hated how reasonable it was.
“Written contract.”
“Of course.”
“No secrecy clause preventing reports to law enforcement.”
Nico’s eyebrows rose.
“Anything else?”
“Yes.”
“If I tell you something medically unsafe, you listen.”
“That’s ambitious.”
“Non-negotiable.”
He held out his hand.
She shook it.
The next morning, Vanessa believed Claire Morgan had been humiliated and fired.
By noon, Claire had a new contract.
By evening, Noah’s surgical authorization remained active.

And at 2:17 the following morning, the estate camera captured Vanessa entering Nico’s bedroom carrying the medication bottle in her own hand.
