Chapter 4 - THE SLAP

The engagement party happened anyway.
That surprised Claire.
“Cancel it.”
“No.”
“Nico.”
“We need them comfortable.”
“You recently learned your fiancée may be drugging you.”
“Exactly.”
“Normal couples therapy seems insufficient.”
He almost smiled.
Claire hated that she liked making him do that.
The party became a trap.
Nico acted weaker.
Not dramatically.
Subtle.
He let his hand tremble once.
Asked Adrian to repeat a name.
Allowed Vanessa to steer his wheelchair in front of guests.
Claire stayed mostly in the service corridor, officially no longer his nurse.
Vanessa relaxed.
That was the goal.
Sixty guests praised loyalty.
Resilience.
Love.
Claire wanted to vomit.
Near the end, she saw Vanessa whisper to Adrian.
“Tomorrow.”
Adrian nodded.
The proxy.
The party ended.
Staff began clearing glasses.
Then the slap cracked through the marble foyer.
Claire ran.
Nico was on the floor.
Wheelchair kicked aside.
Vanessa stood over him.
“You think you can humiliate me?”
She raised her arm again.
Claire caught her wrist.
“You will not touch him again.”
Vanessa’s eyes burned.
“Take your hand off me.”
“When you lower yours.”
Behind Claire:
“Claire.”
Nico.
Calm.
“Let her go.”
Claire did.
Vanessa turned toward him.
“You think because you can suddenly remember a few names you can cancel tomorrow’s signing?”
Nico said nothing.
There.
Admission.
Vanessa continued.
“My father has put millions into this.”
“And?”
“And Adrian has held everything together while you sit in that chair feeling sorry for yourself.”
Claire saw Nico’s hand tighten against the marble.
Vanessa leaned closer.
“You were supposed to sign.”
Nico looked up.
“Supposed to?”
“You know what I mean.”
“Yes.”
His voice became almost gentle.
“I think I do.”
Then Vanessa realized.
The foyer camera.
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
She stepped backward.
“This conversation is over.”
“No.”
Thomas’s voice came from the corridor.
He entered with two people Claire had never seen.
Attorney.
Investigator.
Thomas looked at Vanessa.
“It has just begun.”
Vanessa’s composure broke.
“You people are insane.”
Claire helped Nico into his wheelchair with Thomas.
He hated assistance.
Accepted it.
Progress.
Then Nico looked at Vanessa.
“The wedding is canceled.”
She laughed.
“You’ll regret that.”
“Probably.”
“Adrian will destroy you.”
Nico’s expression chilled.
“He can try.”
Claire leaned close.
“Procedure.”
Nico closed his eyes.
“Right.”
Vanessa left.
Not arrested.
Not yet.
They needed more.
The confrontation gave them evidence of coercive intent.
But poisoning required chain of proof.
Adrian’s link required money.
The crash required more than suspicion.
Overnight, legal counsel turned over selected evidence to state and federal investigators.
The substituted pills.
Lab reports.
Video timelines.
Medical findings.
Corporate documents.
Nobody slept.
At 4:30 a.m., Claire found Nico alone near the lake-facing windows.
“You should rest.”
“I’ve been resting for eight months.”
“That isn’t how spinal rehab works.”
“I know.”
He looked at her.
“Why did you grab her?”
“What?”
“Vanessa.”
“She was going to hit you.”
“People don’t normally interfere when they see my family angry.”
Claire remembered the hospital doctor.
The false charting.
Everyone who knew.
Everyone who looked away.
She said:
“I’ve tried silence.”
“And?”
“It pays badly.”
He smiled.
Then:
“Why did you take this job?”
Claire looked toward the dark lake.
“Noah.”
“Your brother.”
“Yes.”
“Heart surgery.”
“Yes.”
“How old?”
“Seven.”
Nico nodded.
“Your parents?”
“Gone.”
“His father?”
“Not involved.”
“You’re twenty-eight.”
“Yes.”
“And raising him.”
“Yes.”
“That explains the shoes.”
Claire stared.
“What shoes?”
“You’ve had the same nursing sneakers for three months.”
She looked down.
“They work.”
“They’re disintegrating.”
“Are you insulting my fashion?”
“I’m concerned the floor may become your next medical emergency.”
She laughed.
Unexpected.
Too loud.
Nico looked surprised.
Then something changed between them.
Not romance.
Not yet.
Recognition.
Two people whose lives had become responsibility before they were ready.
Then Thomas entered.
His face was grave.
“We found Lena.”
Claire stood.
“The previous nurse?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Indiana.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
Relief hit first.
Then:
“What happened?”
Thomas handed Nico a report.
Lena had not disappeared voluntarily.
She had been paid $150,000 through a shell company after signing a nondisclosure agreement.
In exchange, she agreed never to contact Nico or work in Illinois again.
“Why?”
“She confronted Vanessa about medication.”
Claire went cold.
“Did she take money?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Her husband had gambling debt.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Everyone had a pressure point.
Noah.
Lena’s husband.
Peter in another life.
Adrian and Vanessa understood leverage.
Then Thomas said:
“She wants to talk.”
Nico nodded.
“She talks to investigators.”
Claire agreed.
No secret meeting.
No intimidation.
Evidence.
Lena’s statement changed the case.
She had seen Vanessa crush tablets into Nico’s drink four months earlier.
She confronted her.
Vanessa denied it.
Then Adrian appeared the next day with an offer.
Money.
Leave.
Or Lena’s husband’s debt would become a problem with dangerous people.
She took the money.
Ran.
Hated herself.
Now she was ready to testify.
The poisoning case finally had a witness.
Then Lena gave them one more fact.
“Vanessa wasn’t the one who started it.”
Claire stared.
“Who?”
Lena looked directly at Nico.
May you like
“Your cousin Adrian.”
