Chapter 13 - THE MONEY THAT CAME HOME
The financial investigation continued for more than a year.
Authorities traced funds through several shell companies.
Some assets were recovered.
Others were not.
Audrey's parents eventually recovered a substantial portion of their lost savings through legal proceedings and negotiated settlements.
Not all of it.
But enough to avoid losing their home.
Ethan repaid his undisclosed commission and accepted legal consequences for his involvement.
He also began rebuilding his relationship with Audrey.
Slowly.
Without jokes.
One evening, Richard called.
"Audrey?"
"Hi, Dad."
He hesitated.
"Would you come over Sunday?"
She smiled.
"Why?"
"Dinner."
She laughed softly.
"Who's betting?"
Richard was silent.
Then said:
"No one."
Audrey closed her eyes.
He continued.
"I just want to see my daughter."
She smiled.
"I'll be there."
When she told Dominic, he looked at her.
"Would you like me to come?"
Audrey considered.
Then nodded.
"Yes."
He smiled.
"All right."
She pointed at him.
"But no bodyguards at the table."
