Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO BE FRIGHTENED

The first threatening letter arrived at Claire's temporary apartment on a Tuesday.

No return address.

No signature.

Inside was a photograph of her standing outside the Milwaukee train station.

Beneath it were six words.

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED HOME, CLAIRE.

She stared.

For a moment, the old fear returned.

The Blackwood family had money.

Security.

Influence.

People who could find anyone.

Claire had none of those things.

But she had something else.

A record of what was happening.

She photographed the envelope.

Preserved the original.

And called Rebecca.

The attorney listened.

Then said, "We need to document this and report it appropriately."

Claire nodded.

"I know."

"Are you somewhere safe?"

"Yes."

"Good. Don't confront whoever sent it."

She exhaled.

After the call, Olivia made tea.

Again.

Apparently tea had become the official beverage of marital catastrophe.

Claire looked at her friend.

"Do you think I'm making a mistake?"

Olivia frowned.

"About what?"

"Not going back."

Olivia sat opposite her.

"Do you want to go back?"

Claire hesitated.

She missed Adrian.

His terrible jokes.

The way he slept with one arm around her.

The Sunday mornings when they drank coffee in bed.

The man who'd once driven six hours to bring her a book she'd mentioned wanting.

But she didn't miss the Blackwood dinners.

The expectation that she'd be agreeable.

The cousin who treated her like an outsider.

The aunt who made her responsible for every inconvenience.

And the husband who allowed his family to decide her place.

"I miss him," she said.

Olivia nodded.

"That's not the same thing."

Claire smiled sadly.

"I know."

Three days later, she accepted the position in Milwaukee.

The contract offered a competitive salary.

Professional autonomy.

And the chance to lead a major restoration project.

She signed it with shaking hands.

Then sent Adrian a message through their attorneys.

Not about the marriage.

About the investigation.

Her attorney had found documents suggesting the Duca necklace was tied to Harbor Crown financing.

Adrian's response came through counsel that afternoon.

Thank you. The independent review is examining those transactions. Claire should not be treated as a suspect based solely on the compromised credential.

Claire stared at the words.

For the first time, Adrian had publicly separated her from the accusation.

It was late.

But it mattered.

That evening, another message appeared on her phone.

From an unknown number.

Your husband is being investigated too. If he falls, you fall with him.

Claire stared.

Then typed nothing.

She forwarded it to Rebecca.

Outside, rain tapped against the windows.

She looked toward her suitcase.

For years, she'd spent her life making sure Adrian's world remained comfortable.

Now she was building a world of her own.

And whoever was trying to frighten her had made one enormous mistake.

They assumed she'd rather return to humiliation than face uncertainty.

They didn't know Claire Bennett.

May you like

Not anymore.
