Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH INSIDE THE JEWELRY CASE

The forensic investigation eventually uncovered the mechanism behind the false accusation.
The jewelry case had not been opened through Claire's normal access process.
A privileged administrative session had generated an event associated with her profile.
The footage interruption coincided with that session.
Further examination identified suspicious activity connected to a contractor account used by Vincent's security liaison.
The contractor cooperated with investigators.
He described receiving instructions to perform an undocumented maintenance operation.
Those instructions had come through Vincent's office.
The evidence didn't depend on the contractor's statement alone.
Financial records.
Access logs.
Messages.
And security footage from adjacent hallways supported the sequence.
The investigators also discovered something more serious.
The necklace displayed in the case during the weeks before the dinner wasn't the original Duca collection.
It was a replica.
The original necklace had been removed earlier, under a false conservation authorization, and transferred into private custody associated with the Harbor Crown financing arrangement.
Vincent had arranged the transfer.
The replica's disappearance was staged to create the accusation against Claire.
When Adrian received the report, he sat in silence.
Marcus Reed stood beside the desk.
Beatriz, the independent investigator, waited opposite him.
Finally, Adrian asked, "Are you certain?"
Beatriz nodded.
"The evidence strongly supports that sequence. The matter has been referred to the appropriate authorities."
Adrian looked down.
Vincent.
His cousin.
The man he'd trusted for decades.
The man who'd stood behind his shoulder while Claire begged to be believed.
A terrible memory returned.
If she's innocent, the matter will be settled quickly.
Adrian covered his face.
He'd ordered his wife searched because he trusted a system.
But the system had been manipulated by someone he trusted more than her.
The realization was unbearable.
Then he looked toward the table.
Claire's wedding ring still sat inside a small wooden box.
He hadn't worn it.
Hadn't sent it back.
Hadn't moved it into a drawer.
He looked at Marcus.
"Contact my attorney."
Marcus nodded.
"And?"
"Preserve the findings. Cooperate with the authorities. Suspend Vincent's access to company systems through proper corporate procedures."
Marcus hesitated.
"And the board?"
"They'll receive a factual report."
Adrian looked toward the window.
"No family cover-up."
For the first time, he understood that protecting the Blackwood name had become the perfect excuse for tolerating wrongdoing.
He was finished with that.
Later that evening, Adrian called Beatrice.
She answered immediately.
"Adrian, darling."
He took a breath.
"The security review has found evidence that Claire's credentials were misused."
Silence.
Then Beatrice whispered, "What?"
"The diamonds had been replaced with a replica before the dinner."
She didn't speak.
"Vincent's office is implicated."
A long pause.
Then she said something that made Adrian close his eyes.
"I only wanted her out of that room at the right time."
His stomach dropped.
"Aunt Beatrice."
She began crying.
"I didn't think she'd be accused like that."
Adrian's voice hardened.
"What did Vincent tell you?"
"That he needed access to inspect the case without interrupting the dinner."
Adrian stared.
"And you sent Claire?"
"I thought—"
He interrupted.
"You thought what?"
Beatrice began sobbing.
"I thought it would keep the family out of scandal."
Adrian looked toward the floor.
Claire had served his aunt for four years.
Fetched medication.
Organized appointments.
Sat beside her during lonely afternoons.
And Beatrice had allowed Vincent to use her kindness as part of a scheme.
Adrian closed his eyes.
For the first time, he understood the full depth of Claire's humiliation.
She hadn't simply been accused by strangers.
May you like
She'd been betrayed by the people she'd spent years trying to love.
