Chapter 14 - THE SECOND RING HE DIDN'T OFFER

A year after the diamond scandal, Adrian visited Milwaukee for the opening of the restored train station.

Claire had invited him.

Not as her husband.

As someone who had once believed in her work.

He arrived wearing a dark suit and no entourage.

When he stepped inside the station, he stopped.

The building was magnificent.

Sunlight poured through restored windows.

The mosaics gleamed.

Historic details had been preserved alongside modern accessibility improvements.

Claire stood near the central staircase speaking with a group of visitors.

She wore a navy dress and comfortable shoes.

Her hair was pinned loosely behind her head.

She looked confident.

Happy.

Beautiful.

Adrian watched her for a moment.

Then smiled.

When she saw him, her expression softened.

"You came."

He nodded.

"Of course."

She looked around.

"What do you think?"

He studied the ceiling.

The stonework.

The restored windows.

Then looked back at her.

"It's extraordinary."

Her eyes filled.

"Thank you."

They walked through the station together.

Claire explained the conservation work.

The materials.

The decisions.

The compromises required to preserve history while making the building useful.

Adrian listened.

Really listened.

At one point, he asked, "Do you ever regret leaving Chicago?"

Claire considered the question.

"No."

He nodded.

"I thought so."

She looked at him.

"And you?"

"What about me?"

"Do you regret what happened?"

Adrian stopped.

"Every day."

Claire's expression softened.

He continued.

"But I don't regret you leaving."

She stared.

"What?"

He took a breath.

"You needed a place where you could be fully yourself."

His voice softened.

"And I needed to understand that loving you didn't give me the right to decide how you should live."

Tears filled her eyes.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Adrian reached into his coat pocket.

Claire went still.

He smiled faintly.

"Don't worry."

He removed a small wooden box.

Her heart stumbled.

Inside was her wedding ring.

The white-gold band she'd left beside his wine glass.

Adrian held it out.

"I wanted to return this."

Claire stared.

He continued.

"Not as a proposal. Not as a request that you come home."

His voice softened.

"It's yours. You should decide what it means now."

Claire took the box.

Her hands trembled.

For four years, she'd worn that ring believing it symbolized safety.

Then she'd removed it because the person who gave it to her had publicly betrayed her trust.

Now it rested in her palm.

Not as an obligation.

As a choice.

She looked at Adrian.

"Thank you."

He nodded.

They stood quietly.

Then Claire asked, "Are you seeing anyone?"

Adrian looked surprised.

"No."

She smiled faintly.

"Neither am I."

A pause.

Then he laughed softly.

"That seems like a dangerous conversation."

Claire laughed.

"Possibly."

He studied her.

"Claire, I don't want to rush you."

"I know."

She took a breath.

"But I'd like to have dinner with you."

Adrian stopped breathing.

"Really?"

She smiled.

"One dinner."

He laughed through tears.

"One dinner."

"No business negotiations."

"Agreed."

"No Blackwood family politics."

"Absolutely."

"And no security guards in the restaurant."

He smiled.

"Reasonable arrangements, discreetly."

Claire laughed.

Then looked toward the restored ceiling.

For years, she'd studied how damaged structures could be repaired.

Sometimes restoration required replacing what couldn't be saved.

Sometimes it required preserving what remained.

And sometimes it meant admitting that the original structure could never be exactly the same.

But that didn't mean it couldn't become something beautiful again.

She looked at Adrian.

Then smiled.

May you like

"Let's see what happens."
