Chapter 8 - Rebuilding What Was Broken

For three consecutive weekends, Logan stayed two hours after his shift ended to work on Eli’s bicycle.

Julian watched from his office window as Logan used his own modest warehouse wages to buy stainless steel spokes, high-grade ceramic bearings, and a new chain. Logan didn't mention the expense to anyone. He spent hours teaching Eli how to use a spoke wrench, balancing the tension quarter-turn by quarter-turn until the wheel spun as straight and true as an arrow.

On the final Saturday, Logan rolled the bicycle out into the sunlight.

The rust had been stripped, the frame repainted in a brilliant, lustrous cherry red, and the chrome handlebars polished until they mirrored the blue sky.

Eli ran his fingers along the glossy red paint, tears welling in his eyes. “It looks like it just came out of a showroom.”

Logan pulled a brand-new, heavy-duty U-lock from his pocket and handed the brass key to the boy.

“This lock belongs to you,” Logan said, his voice thick with emotion. “Keep it safe. And whenever someone tries to tell you that you don't belong, you remember how much work you put into this machine.”

Eli threw his arms around Logan’s waist, hugging him tight. “Thank you, Logan. Thank you so much.”

As the boy rode away down the alley, laughing as the new bearings whirred smoothly against the pavement, Logan stood watching him, his hands trembling slightly at his sides.

Julian walked up beside him, handing him an iced coffee.

“You okay?” Julian asked.

Logan wiped a tear from his cheek with the back of a callused, grease-stained thumb. “I threw that exact bike into a ditch ten years ago, Jules. I spent ten years running away from who I was.”

“You’re not running anymore,” Julian said, placing a heavy, reassuring hand on Logan’s shoulder. “You brought it back.”
