Chapter 14 - A LOVE THAT HAD TO BE EARNED

We didn't reconcile immediately.
There were no grand gestures.
No sudden forgiveness.
Alexander began therapy.
He worked on his anger.
His need for control.
His inability to communicate.
I continued living independently.
Oliver spent time with both of us.
We attended family counseling.
Learned how to speak honestly.
How to disagree without hurting each other.
Months passed.
One evening, Alexander invited me to dinner.
Not at the Moretti estate.
A small restaurant near the river.
I arrived wearing a simple black dress.
He stood when he saw me.
“You look beautiful.”
I smiled.
“Thank you.”
We ate.
Talked.
Laughed.
For the first time in years, being with him felt easy.
After dinner, we walked beside the river.
Alexander stopped.
“Claire.”
I looked at him.
He swallowed.
“I love you.”
My heart raced.
He continued.
“I know those words aren't enough.”
I nodded.
“No.”
He smiled sadly.
“But I want to spend the rest of my life proving them.”
I looked at him.
For a moment, I remembered the anniversary dinner.
The humiliation.
The loneliness.
Then I remembered the months since my return.
The changes.
The honesty.
The father he'd become.
I took a breath.
“I can't promise we'll be okay.”
Alexander nodded.
“I know.”
I smiled faintly.
“But I'm willing to try.”
His eyes filled.
“Really?”
I nodded.
May you like
“Yes.”
And for the first time, our future belonged to both of us.
