Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO BE BOUGHT

Natalie was twenty weeks pregnant when Matteo offered to buy her a house.
She declined.
He offered a private medical team.
She declined that too.
He offered to cover every expense.
Natalie agreed only to discuss appropriate support for their child through legal counsel.
Matteo looked at her across the conference table.
“I want to help.”
Natalie nodded.
“Then respect my decisions.”
He swallowed.
“I am trying.”
She looked down.
For years, Matteo had solved problems with money.
Flowers after arguments.
Jewelry after missed birthdays.
Vacations after weeks of silence.
But this time, she didn't want gifts.
She wanted peace.
And peace couldn't be purchased.
Natalie had begun working again as an interior designer.
She rented a small studio in Brooklyn.
Her first project was a café.
Then a bookstore.
Then a family home.
She loved the work.
Loved making decisions.
Loved having something that belonged entirely to her.
One afternoon, Rebecca visited the studio.
Natalie stood beside a wall covered in fabric samples.
Rebecca smiled.
“You look happy.”
Natalie laughed softly.
“I am.”
Rebecca looked toward her stomach.
“And the baby?”
Natalie smiled.
“Doing well.”
May you like
She placed her hand over the gentle curve.
For the first time in months, she felt hopeful without needing Matteo to be part of the reason.
