Chapter 5 - THE SECOND CAMERA

The camera that broke the case was not in the foyer.

It was in Noah’s nursery.

Tessa installed it.

Technically without Grant’s explicit permission.

She almost lost the evidence because of that.

But the device was a baby monitor camera purchased by Tessa and placed openly on a shelf to monitor naps.

Not hidden.

No private adult space.

Legal enough for investigators to evaluate.

The recordings showed:

Vivienne entering.

Removing Noah’s comfort toy.

Leaving him crying.

Returning only after long intervals.

Telling him:

“Your father won’t come.”

“Stop crying.”

“Good boys don’t make noise.”

Nothing dramatic enough alone.

Then one clip changed everything.

Vivienne on speakerphone.

Dr. Vale:

“He needs documented regression.”

Vivienne:

“He’s fine with Tessa.”

Dr. Vale:

“Then remove Tessa.”

Vivienne:

“I’m trying.”

Silence.

Dr. Vale:

“You need Mercer dependent on your judgment before the marriage.”

Vivienne:

“He already is.”

Grant stopped the video.

That sentence hurt more than the rest.

He already is.

She had not only manipulated Noah.

She had studied Grant.

His grief.

His work.

His guilt.

His desire to believe someone else could manage the parts of fatherhood that frightened him.

Tessa had become the obstacle because she saw too much.

The vase attack was not planned fraud.

It was rage.

But rage triggered by a larger scheme.

That distinction mattered.

The criminal case expanded.

Dr. Vale’s records were subpoenaed.

He had drafted evaluation language before ever examining Noah.

One draft:

“Probable long-term developmental dependency with significant caregiving burden.”

For a child he had never met.

Grant read that line three times.

Then called Celia.

“Freeze every connection to Brightwell.”

Already done.

The bank trustee initiated independent review.

No trust funds had been disbursed to Brightwell.

Not one dollar.

That was the good news.

The bad news?

Vivienne had already positioned herself as a future gatekeeper.

The money was the goal.

May you like

Noah was the instrument.
