Chapter 3 - VIVIENNE’S FIRST LIE

Vivienne was arrested the next morning.

Not for trust fraud yet.

For assault and child endangerment.

The financial case took longer.

Dr. Vale denied everything.

Of course.

Brightwell issued a statement saying Vivienne had no formal role.

Technically true.

Then investigators found payments.

Vivienne had received $180,000 in “consulting fees” through a separate firm.

Consulting for what?

Family-care acquisition strategy.

Grant nearly broke his phone reading that.

Noah had become an acquisition strategy.

Then Tessa found something more personal.

She asked to meet Grant in the kitchen.

No lawyers.

No cameras.

Just them.

“I need to tell you something.”

He waited.

“The first time Vivienne hurt him wasn’t yesterday.”

Grant froze.

“When?”

“Seven weeks ago.”

Tessa described it.

Noah knocked over a bowl of strawberries.

Vivienne slapped his hand hard enough to leave finger marks.

Tessa confronted her.

Vivienne said:

“Don’t interfere with how I raise my future son.”

Grant’s face went white.

“You documented it?”

“Yes.”

“Photo?”

“Yes.”

She showed him.

Tiny hand.

Red marks.

Date stamped.

Grant looked sick.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“That night.”

He remembered.

He had been in Zurich.

She called.

He didn’t answer.

Then she texted:

Need to discuss something serious involving Noah and Vivienne.

His reply:

Can it wait until Sunday?

Tessa wrote:

I don’t think so.

He never responded.

Because Vivienne called him five minutes later and said:

“Tessa is overreacting again.”

Grant had believed her.

He covered his face.

“I failed him.”

Tessa said nothing.

Good.

He did not need comfort yet.

Then he looked at her.

“I failed you too.”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

He almost laughed.

Nobody in his world answered that honestly.

He liked it.

Hated it.

May you like

Needed it.
