Chapter 14 - THE PROMISE HE MADE WITHOUT A RING

Casius and Delaney dated for nearly two years before he proposed.
Their relationship was not simple.
He had spent much of his life controlling outcomes.
She had spent much of hers resisting control.
They argued.
About schedules.
About security.
About his habit of making decisions before asking her opinion.
But they learned.
Casius learned to listen.
Delaney learned that accepting kindness didn't mean surrendering independence.
He continued working to disentangle his life from the criminal organization he'd inherited.
The process involved investigations, difficult admissions, and consequences he couldn't avoid.
Delaney didn't excuse his past.
He didn't ask her to.
One evening, they sat on the balcony of his lakeside home.
The sky was orange.
The water was calm.
Casius looked at her.
"Do you remember the night we met?"
Delaney laughed softly.
"Hard to forget."
His expression changed.
"I've thought about it a thousand times."
She looked at him.
"I watched you fall."
Delaney nodded.
"And I did nothing."
Silence.
He continued.
"I can't change that."
She looked down.
"No."
"But I can spend the rest of my life refusing to be that man again."
Delaney's eyes filled.
Casius took a breath.
"I love you."
She smiled.
"I know."
He laughed softly.
"I don't deserve you."
Delaney shook her head.
"Don't do that."
He frowned.
"Do what?"
"Turn love into a debt."
He stared.
She continued.
"I don't need you to spend your life paying for one terrible night."
Her voice softened.
"I need you to keep choosing the man you're becoming."
Casius's eyes filled.
He reached for her hand.
"Then will you marry me?"
Delaney smiled through tears.
"Yes."
He laughed.
"Yes?"
She nodded.
"Yes, Casius."
He kissed her.
And beside the lake, the man who had once believed power meant never admitting fault made the most important promise of his life.
To love without controlling.
May you like
To protect without possessing.
And to remain accountable even when nobody was watching.
