Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO BE BOUGHT

The Ferraro family offered Delaney financial assistance.

She refused.

At first.

Sofia wanted to pay off her mortgage.

Casius offered to replace her car.

A family attorney suggested establishing a private fund.

Delaney listened.

Then shook her head.

"I don't want your money."

Casius looked surprised.

"Why?"

"Because I don't want anyone thinking they can purchase my silence or gratitude."

He nodded slowly.

"Fair."

Instead, Delaney worked with an independent attorney to pursue appropriate legal remedies connected to her father's wrongful accusation and the misconduct surrounding his death.

She also sought correction of the employment records that had damaged his reputation.

St. Bellamy Hospital issued a formal statement acknowledging that Thomas Pierce had raised legitimate concerns and that the theft allegation against him had been unsupported.

The hospital also apologized to Delaney for its handling of the gala incident and reinstated her employment status pending her decision.

Delaney read the statement three times.

Then visited her father's grave.

She placed a copy beside the flowers.

"They finally said it, Dad."

Her voice trembled.

"You weren't a thief."

She sat on the grass.

The wind moved through the trees.

"I wish you'd been here to hear it."

She cried.

Then smiled through her tears.

"Maybe you already knew."

A week later, Delaney decided not to return to St. Bellamy.

Instead, she accepted a position at a community health clinic.

The salary was smaller.

The hours were better.

And the work felt meaningful.

Casius asked whether she was sure.

She smiled.

"Completely."

He nodded.

"Then I'm happy for you."

She studied him.

"You're not going to offer to buy the clinic?"

He laughed.

"I was considering it."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Casius."

He lifted both hands.

"All right. No buying clinics."

She laughed.

And for the first time, their relationship felt light.

Not built on tragedy.

Not defined by money.

Just two people learning how to enjoy each other's company.
