Chapter 13 - THE FIANCÉE WHO LOST EVERYTHING

Camille Ashford's trial attracted national attention.
The evidence against her included messages, financial records, and testimony connecting her to the unlawful transfer and confinement of Sofia Ferraro.
The assault against Delaney was also investigated separately.
Camille denied wrongdoing.
Her attorneys argued that she'd acted under pressure from her father.
But the evidence showed she had made deliberate decisions.
Edmund Ashford faced charges connected to financial fraud and obstruction.
Merrick Doyle entered a plea agreement that required his testimony and acknowledgment of his role in Thomas Pierce's death.
August Bellamy testified about his own failure to act.
The proceedings were painful for Delaney.
She attended some hearings.
Skipped others.
And relied on legal counsel and emotional support when she needed it.
At the conclusion of the relevant proceedings, the court imposed sentences and financial penalties according to the established offenses.
The fraudulent procurement network was dismantled.
For Delaney, the most important moment wasn't a sentence.
It was the day the court formally acknowledged that her father had tried to expose wrongdoing.
Afterward, reporters gathered outside.
One called her name.
"Miss Pierce, do you feel justice has been served?"
Delaney stopped.
She considered the question.
Then answered:
"Justice doesn't give me my father back."
The reporters fell quiet.
"But the truth matters."
She looked toward the courthouse.
"And I hope nobody else has to spend seven years waiting for people in power to tell it."
Then she walked away.
Casius waited near the curb.
He didn't open the car door immediately.
He looked at her.
"How do you feel?"
Delaney took a breath.
"Tired."
He nodded.
"Anything else?"
She considered.
"Free."
Casius smiled.
"Good."
May you like
She reached for his hand.
And this time, she didn't let go.
