Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT ETHAN CALLED HER MOM

Ethan had a nightmare during a family weekend.
He woke screaming.
I rushed into the guest room.
Claire was already there.
She sat beside him, speaking softly.
"You're safe."
Ethan was crying.
"I dreamed Dad disappeared."
My chest tightened.
Claire looked at me.
Then back at him.
"Your dad's right here."
Ethan shook his head.
"Mom disappeared too."
Claire's expression softened.
She understood.
Sarah's death still lived inside him.
Claire didn't try to replace her.
She simply stayed.
Later, Ethan fell asleep holding Claire's hand.
I stood in the doorway.
She looked up.
"He's okay."
I nodded.
"Thank you."
She smiled.
"He's a good kid."
I looked at my son.
"He is."
The next morning, Ethan wandered into the kitchen.
Claire was making pancakes.
He rubbed his eyes.
"Mom?"
She froze.
I froze.
Ethan blinked.
Then looked embarrassed.
"Sorry."
Claire knelt beside him.
"You don't have to apologize."
His eyes filled.
"I didn't mean—"
She smiled gently.
"It's okay."
He looked down.
"Can I call you that sometimes?"
Claire's eyes filled.
She glanced at me.
I nodded.
She turned back.
"Only if you want to."
Ethan hugged her.
She held him.
And I stood beside the refrigerator trying not to cry.
Later, Claire whispered:
"I don't want him to feel like I'm replacing Sarah."
I shook my head.
"You're not."
She looked at me.
"How do you know?"
"Because love doesn't erase the people who came before."

She smiled through tears.
And for the first time, our complicated family began to feel whole.
