Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO BE RESCUED

Claire surprised me three months later.

She announced she was returning to nursing.

Full-time.

At a children's hospital.

I stared.

"Are you sure?"

She raised an eyebrow.

"About working?"

"No. About the schedule."

She smiled.

"I've arranged childcare."

I nodded.

"Good."

She studied me.

"You thought I was going to stay home and let you pay for everything?"

I hesitated.

"Maybe."

Claire laughed.

"Alexander."

I smiled sheepishly.

"Fair."

She folded her arms.

"I appreciate what you've done for the girls. But I need my own life."

I nodded.

"I understand."

She looked at me.

"Do you?"

I considered.

Then smiled.

"I'm learning."

Claire returned to work.

She loved it.

She came home exhausted but fulfilled.

She told stories about children who made her laugh.

Families who surprised her.

Small victories that mattered more than money.

I watched her rebuild her confidence.

And I fell in love with her again.

Not because she needed me.

Because she didn't.

One evening, we sat on her porch.

The girls were asleep.

Ethan was spending the night with a friend.

Claire looked at me.

"Alexander."

"Yes?"

"Why are you still here?"

I smiled.

"Because I like your porch."

She laughed.

"Seriously."

I looked at her.

"Because I love you."

Her smile faded.

I continued.

"I loved you eleven years ago. I never really stopped."

She looked down.

"Alexander—"

"I know."

I raised a hand.

"I'm not asking you to say it back."

She stared.

Then whispered:

"I'm scared."

I nodded.

"So am I."

She looked at me.

"Of what?"

I smiled sadly.

"Getting this wrong."

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Claire reached for my hand.

And held it.
