Chapter 9 - MAYA CARTER BUILDS SOMETHING

I didn't join Sterling Advanced Systems.

I founded my own company.

Carter Resilient Energy.

I invested twelve million of my prize money.

Not a hundred.

I wanted enough left that failure wouldn't destroy Ethan's future.

Our first office was in Brooklyn.

Nine employees.

Secondhand desks.

One coffee machine that violated several laws of physics.

We designed fault-tolerant control systems for hospitals, shelters and municipal power grids.

Systems built to keep functioning when sensors failed, networks were attacked or disasters cut communities off.

I knew something about systems surviving under pressure.

Our first year was awful.

We nearly failed twice.

Our second year was better.

Our third changed everything.

Carter Resilient won a contract to modernize emergency power systems across twelve public hospitals.

At the announcement ceremony, I saw Daniel standing in the back.

Free.

No security.

No expensive suit.

Just Daniel.

I finished my speech.

He waited until everyone else had congratulated me.

Then approached.

“Dr. Carter.”

“Not yet.”

“Soon.”

“You look different.”

“So do you.”

“What are you doing?”

“Consulting.”

“For?”

“Companies trying not to become criminal organizations.”

I laughed.

“Specific market.”

“Surprisingly large.”

Then he handed me something.

An envelope.

Inside was the original restaurant receipt from the Grand Meridian.

My table number.

My name.

And the coffee Daniel never finished.

“You kept this?”

“The hotel manager sent it to me after the trial.”

“Why?”

“He thought it was historically important.”

“It's a receipt.”

“Exactly.”

I looked at him.

“What do you want, Daniel?”

No games.

No money.

No empire.

He answered:

“Dinner.”

I smiled.

“That's it?”

“If dinner goes well, another dinner.”

“And if it doesn't?”

“I go home.”

Growth indeed.

“Okay.”

Our first real date cost sixty-three dollars.

Daniel paid.

I left the tip.

Our second involved bowling.

He was terrible.

Our third ended with a kiss.

No bodyguards.

No penthouse.

No danger.

Just Daniel standing outside my Brooklyn apartment asking:

“May I?”

“Yes.”

He kissed me.

May you like

And for once, nothing exploded afterward.
