Chapter 6 - DANIEL STERLING WITHOUT AN EMPIRE

Daniel was released when forensic evidence proved the gun had been stolen from a secure collection months earlier.

He came to see me.

No entourage.

No suit.

No armored SUV.

He looked tired.

“You turned down five hundred million dollars.”

“Apparently.”

“Why?”

“I already have a hundred.”

He almost smiled.

“You haven't accepted it yet.”

“Technicality.”

Then he became serious.

“Vincent won't stop.”

“I know.”

“I can move you and Ethan.”

“No.”

“Maya.”

“We've done this argument.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“I lost.”

“Growth.”

He laughed.

Then I asked:

“Did you know people were being trafficked through your routes?”

His smile vanished.

“No.”

“Would you tell me if you did?”

“Yes.”

I believed him.

That frightened me.

“What happens now?”

Daniel sat at my tiny kitchen table.

For the first time, he looked less like a king than a man.

“I destroy what my family built.”

I stared.

“Your criminal network?”

“Yes.”

“You'll lose everything.”

“Not everything.”

“What do you mean?”

He looked at me.

Too long.

I understood.

“Don't.”

“What?”

“Don't turn me into your redemption.”

His expression changed.

“I'm not.”

“Good.”

I sat opposite him.

“If you stop being a criminal because you want me, then the first time we fight, you'll resent me.”

He absorbed that.

“You need to do it because you know it's wrong.”

Silence.

Finally:

“I do.”

That answer mattered.

Daniel began cooperating with Sloan.

Not for immunity.

She offered none.

He provided ledgers.

Names.

Routes.

Officials.

Years of evidence.

Some implicated him.

I asked why.

He said:

“If I edit the truth until I look innocent, I'm still doing what Vincent does.”

For the first time, I saw a future version of Daniel Sterling I might actually respect.

Then my own future arrived.

MIT contacted me.

Professor Shaw had heard what happened at the Grand Meridian.

My scholarship couldn't simply be restored after so many years.

But my credits remained.

They offered a path back.

I stared at the email for twenty minutes.

Daniel found me crying.

“What happened?”

I showed him.

He smiled.

“You're going back.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Ethan.”

From the hallway:

“Don't blame me!”

Ethan appeared.

“You dropped out because of Mom. Then you stayed out because of me.”

“You were fourteen.”

“I'm eighteen next month.”

“You put aluminum foil in the microwave last year.”

“One time.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You did what?”

“Not relevant.”

Ethan turned to me.

“Go back.”

I cried harder.

He hugged me.

“You already kept me alive.”

His voice cracked.

“Now do something for you.”

Daniel looked away to give us privacy.

That was the moment I started falling in love with him.

Not because he was powerful.

May you like

Because, for once, he knew when not to enter the center of the room.
