Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT THE EMPIRE BURNED

Vincent struck before Daniel could finish cooperating.
Three Sterling warehouses burned in one night.
No workers were killed.
That wasn't mercy.
It was a message.
Then Sterling Advanced Systems' source code appeared online.
Investors fled.
Banks froze credit.
Daniel's board removed him as CEO pending investigation.
In forty-eight hours, he lost control of the company he had spent his adult life building.
I found him alone in the prototype lab.
The machine I had fixed sat dark.
“Are you okay?”
“No.”
At least he had learned that answer.
“What do you need?”
“I don't know.”
“Good. We're making progress.”
He looked at me.
“I used to think losing power was the worst thing that could happen.”
“And now?”
“I've discovered there are worse things.”
“Like?”
“Discovering what you protected with it.”
He told me about his father.
The first time Daniel saw a man beaten, he was nine.
The first time he was ordered to participate in violence, seventeen.
At twenty-three, his father died.
Daniel inherited everything.
“I told myself I'd make it cleaner.”
I sat beside him.
“Did you?”
“For a while.”
“And then?”
“I learned that if you own the cage, you start calling it a house.”
That line stayed with me.
Daniel turned over all remaining criminal records to Sloan.
Vincent responded by calling a meeting of the old organization.
Daniel was invited.
Everyone expected blood.
Daniel went unarmed.
Sloan knew.
Federal agents monitored everything.
Vincent stood before forty men and offered Daniel a choice.
Take back the organization.
Kill the investigation.
Return to power.
Daniel looked around the room.
Men who feared his name.
Men who had bowed to his father.
Then he said:
“No.”
Vincent laughed.
“You'd throw away a dynasty for a waitress?”
Daniel answered:
“No.”
My heart stopped.
Then:
“I'm throwing it away because it should have ended before she ever met me.”
That was the correct answer.
Vincent ordered his men to seize him.
Half refused.
Daniel had spent years believing fear created loyalty.
It didn't.
Federal agents entered moments later.
Vincent was arrested.
So were several others.
Daniel was arrested too.
He had known he would be.
Before they took him away, he looked through the crowd.
I stood behind the agents.
Our eyes met.
No promises.
No dramatic declarations.
He simply nodded.
And I nodded back.
Do the right thing.
Even when it costs you.
May you like
Especially then.
