Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT THE MUSIC STOPPED

The Marigold Theater hosted its first small community event three months later.
The renovation wasn't finished.
But the lobby had been cleaned.
The lighting repaired.
The stage made safe.
Elliot invited local musicians.
Families.
Community organizers.
And a handful of supporters.
Norah helped serve refreshments.
She wore comfortable shoes.
Elliot had insisted.
The event began beautifully.
A string quartet played softly.
The sound levels were controlled.
A quiet room remained available.
Then Enzo arrived.
Uninvited.
He walked into the lobby with two associates.
His expression was furious.
“What is this?”
Elliot stood near the entrance.
“A community event.”
Enzo looked around.
“You're wasting money.”
Elliot met his eyes.
“It's my money.”
Enzo stepped closer.
“You're embarrassing the family.”
Elliot's shoulders tightened.
But he didn't move away.
“No.”
Enzo laughed.
“You think you're in charge now?”
Elliot took a breath.
“Of this building, yes.”
Enzo reached for his arm.
Elliot stepped back.
“Don't touch me.”
The words were clear.
Firm.
Enzo froze.
Norah stood nearby.
She didn't intervene.
Elliot had asked her not to speak for him unless he requested it.
He looked directly at his brother.
“You are not welcome here.”
Enzo stared.
Then laughed bitterly.
“You'll regret this.”
He turned and left.
The room remained silent.
Elliot's hands trembled.
Norah approached.
“Do you want to step outside?”
He nodded.
They walked into the cool night.
Elliot exhaled slowly.
“I did it.”
Norah smiled.
“Yes.”
He looked at her.
“I told him no.”
May you like
She squeezed his hand.
“And he heard you.”
