Chapter 9 - CLAIRE'S LAST FILE
Three years after Claire died, Thomas sent me a hard drive.
Found during his move.
One encrypted folder.
Password hint:
Lily's middle name + wedding year
Claire.
Always.
I opened it.
Videos.
Documents.
Then one file:
FOR DANIEL IF I CHICKEN OUT
I almost didn't open.
Then did.
Claire appeared on screen.
Alive.
Home office.
Hair messy.
Coffee mug.
“Hi.”
I cried instantly.
She laughed in the video.
“If you're watching this, I probably failed at having a normal adult conversation.”
Classic Claire.
She explained Heritage.
Rebecca.
Dad.
Thomas.
Then something I didn't expect.
“I need to say this clearly: your family is not entirely evil.”
I laughed through tears.
“They love badly when control is threatened.”
That was it.
“You were raised to believe loyalty means protecting the family from consequences. Daniel, that is not loyalty.”
She leaned closer.
“Loyalty is telling people the truth before the world does it less kindly.”
I paused.
Claire had tried to teach me even before dying.
Then:
“If Rebecca has done what I suspect, don't turn Lily into a monument to my anger.”
I stopped breathing.
“Don't teach our girl to hate somebody on my behalf.”
Claire smiled sadly.
“Protect her. Tell her truth when she's ready. But let her decide what relationships mean to her.”
That was exactly what I had stumbled toward.
Then she said:
“And please stop calling your dad every time you need permission to make a decision. You're forty.”
I laughed.
I had been thirty-eight.
Still fair.
Final minutes were personal.
She loved me.
She loved Lily.
She was scared.
She planned to tell me Friday.
She did not think Rebecca would physically hurt her.
She underestimated risk.
Then:
“If I'm wrong about all of this, delete the video and take me somewhere with margaritas.”
I sobbed.
The file ended.
I watched it once.
Never again for a year.
Then I showed the first part to Lily's therapist.
Not Lily yet.
Someday.
The documents completed several civil cases.
Her evidence helped the whistleblower fund recover additional money from Heritage.
But the most important thing was that video.
Claire had given me instructions for life without knowing she was doing it.
Protect.
Tell truth.
Don't weaponize her memory.
