Chapter 1 - THE CLOSED DOOR

Everyone At My Father’s Birthday Party Told Me My Three-Year-Old Daughter Was “Being Dramatic.” Then She Pointed At Grandpa And Revealed Why She Had Been Crying Alone Behind A Closed Door.
I heard Lily before I saw her.
She was curled on the laundry-room floor, frightened and shaking, with a red mark across her cheek.
The moment she saw me, she threw herself into my arms.
Outside, I demanded to know what happened.
My sister Rebecca denied touching her.
Mom insisted Lily probably hurt herself.
Dad looked irritated that I was interrupting his party.
Nobody seemed surprised by what I had found.
That bothered me more than anything.
Then Dad spoke.
“Children fall, Daniel. Stop being so dramatic.”
Lily suddenly stopped breathing against my shoulder.
I followed her eyes.
She was staring at her grandfather.
Then she whispered:
“Daddy… Grandpa told Aunt Rebecca to do it.”
The entire patio went silent.
Rebecca reached for her phone.
My father’s expression changed instantly.
Then he looked directly at me and said:
“You have no idea what that child just ruined.”
That sentence made my blood run cold.
Because innocent people ask what happened.
My family already seemed to know exactly what Lily had revealed.

And I was about to find out why.
