Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO FINALLY TOLD THE TRUTH

Vanessa came to see me six weeks after Grace was born.

Not at the estate.

Not at the hospital.

At Rebecca's office.

She arrived without makeup.

Without designer jewelry.

Without Caleb.

I barely recognized her.

Rebecca sat beside me.

Vanessa looked down.

“I need to tell you something.”

I crossed my arms.

“Then tell me.”

She swallowed.

“Caleb lied to me.”

I almost laughed.

“That's unfortunate.”

She looked up.

“I know you hate me.”

I stared.

“Vanessa, you wore my mother's bracelet.”

Her eyes filled.

“I know.”

She reached into her bag.

And placed it on the table.

The diamond bracelet.

I stared.

Vanessa pushed it toward me.

“I'm sorry.”

I didn't touch it.

Not yet.

She explained that Caleb had promised to leave me.

He'd told her our marriage was already over.

He'd claimed my father intended to give him control of Ashford Global.

He'd promised her a senior position in the company.

And a future together.

Then the audit began.

And Caleb started blaming her for the suspicious transactions.

“I signed documents,” Vanessa whispered.

“Which documents?”

She looked at Rebecca.

“I brought copies.”

Rebecca opened the folder.

Inside were emails.

Payment instructions.

And messages showing Caleb had directed several questionable transactions.

Vanessa also provided communications suggesting he'd pressured her to approve invoices she didn't understand.

Rebecca studied the documents.

“These need to go to the investigators.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.”

I looked at her.

“Why are you telling the truth now?”

She began crying.

“Because he told me I was replaceable.”

I stared.

She wiped her face.

“And I realized that's what he thinks every woman is.”

For a moment, I saw something familiar in her expression.

The humiliation.

The disbelief.

The terrible realization that someone you'd trusted had been using you.

I didn't forgive her.

Not then.

Maybe not ever.

But I accepted the evidence.

As she stood to leave, Vanessa looked at me.

“Eleanor.”

I waited.

“I'm sorry about your father.”

My throat tightened.

She continued.

“And I'm sorry about the funeral.”

I nodded once.

May you like

Then said:

“Tell the truth to the investigators. That's the apology that matters.”
