Chapter 10 - THE FORTUNE HE COULDN'T TOUCH

The financial investigation expanded.
Independent forensic accountants reviewed the transactions.
Regulators became involved.
Law enforcement examined evidence of potential fraud and document falsification.
Caleb's attorneys challenged several findings.
But the records continued to accumulate.
The forty-two million dollars had not vanished in one transaction.
It had moved through consulting contracts.
Acquisition fees.
Inflated invoices.
And companies with overlapping ownership.
The investigators traced substantial sums to accounts connected to Caleb's associates.
Vanessa's documents helped clarify who had approved certain payments.
Meanwhile, the divorce proceedings continued.
Caleb demanded access to assets held in my father's trust.
Rebecca challenged those claims using the trust documents and applicable law.
The court would determine the legal treatment of disputed property, but the trust's structure made clear that Caleb did not automatically control its holdings merely because we were married.
One afternoon, Rebecca called.
“Eleanor, we have good news.”
I was feeding Grace.
“What happened?”
“The court has entered temporary orders addressing financial support and parenting arrangements while the case proceeds.”
I closed my eyes.
“Thank God.”
She continued.
“And the company has filed additional claims seeking recovery of misappropriated funds.”
I looked toward the window.
For months, Caleb had told me I would lose everything.
Now the truth was catching up with him.
That evening, I walked through my father's library carrying Grace.
The hidden archive was still there.
The files had been preserved and reviewed by counsel.
The letters were safely stored.
I stopped before his photograph.
“Dad.”
My voice broke.
“We're okay.”
Grace stirred against my shoulder.
I smiled.
“She's beautiful.”
Tears filled my eyes.
“You would have loved her.”
May you like
Then I whispered:
“And I'm going to make sure she knows you.”
