Chapter 12 - THE DAY CALEB LOST HIS LAST THREAT

Caleb's criminal case moved slowly.

There were hearings.

Motions.

Document reviews.

And months of uncertainty.

Eventually, he entered a guilty plea to charges arising from the financial misconduct, with sentencing to follow.

The court imposed penalties and restitution obligations under the applicable proceedings.

I didn't attend every hearing.

I had a daughter to raise.

A company to help govern.

And a life to rebuild.

One afternoon, Rebecca called.

“Eleanor, the divorce judgment has been entered.”

I sat down.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

“It's final?”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

I expected to feel triumphant.

Instead, I felt tired.

Then relieved.

Then strangely peaceful.

The parenting arrangements had been determined through the legal process, with Grace's welfare as the priority.

Caleb's rights and responsibilities were addressed by the court.

I didn't need to invent punishments.

I didn't need to use Grace as a weapon.

I needed to give her stability.

That evening, I took Grace into the garden.

She was learning to walk.

She held my fingers.

Took three uncertain steps.

Then fell onto the grass.

I gasped.

She laughed.

I laughed too.

Then she stood again.

And tried.

I watched her.

And suddenly understood something.

My father had spent his life teaching me how to stand after falling.

May you like

But Grace was teaching me something even more important.

How to begin again without being ashamed of the fall.
