Chapter 14 - THE FAMILY WE CHOSE

Two years later, I graduated from my hospitality management program.
Dominic attended the ceremony.
So did Ethan.
So did Lily.
When my name was called, Lily stood on her chair and shouted, “THAT'S MY MOMMY!”
The entire row laughed.
Dominic clapped louder than anyone.
I nearly cried walking across the stage.
A month later, I opened a small event-planning business.
I named it Bennett & Bloom.
The business focused on intimate weddings, family celebrations, and community events.
Dominic supported me.
But the company belonged to me.
My name was on the documents.
My decisions shaped its future.
And I loved every exhausting minute.
Our relationship grew slowly.
We spent weekends together.
Took the children to museums.
Cooked dinner.
Argued about movies.
Learned each other's habits.
Dominic discovered that Lily hated peas.
I discovered that Ethan loved astronomy.
And both children discovered that Dominic was terrible at baking.
One Sunday, he attempted a birthday cake.
The frosting collapsed.
The layers leaned sideways.
Lily stared at it.
Then whispered, “Daddy Dominic?”
He froze.
The room went silent.
She looked up.
“Can I call you that?”
Dominic knelt.
His eyes filled.
“Only if you want to.”
She smiled.
“Okay.”
Then she hugged him.
I turned away quickly.
I was crying.
That evening, Dominic found me on the porch.
“Grace?”
I looked up.
He sat beside me.
“Are you okay?”
I nodded.
“Just emotional.”
He smiled.
“Me too.”
We sat quietly.
Then he said, “I love you.”
My heart stopped.
He continued.
“I love the way you fight for your daughter. The way you tell the truth even when it's difficult. The way you make this house feel like a home.”
I looked at him.
“I love you too.”
He closed his eyes.
Then kissed me.
Six months later, Dominic proposed in the garden.
The children helped.
Ethan carried the ring box.
Lily scattered flower petals everywhere except the path.
Dominic knelt beneath the old oak tree.
“Grace Bennett, you walked into my life when I thought I understood everything about power.”
His voice shook.
“You taught me that the strongest thing a man can do is listen.”
I began crying.
He smiled.
“You saved my family long before I knew how to ask for help.”
He opened the box.
“Will you marry me?”
I laughed through tears.
“Yes.”
Lily screamed.
Ethan cheered.
May you like
Dominic stood and kissed me.
And beneath the oak tree, the family we had chosen began celebrating the future.
