Chapter 12 - THE LETTER MICHAEL NEVER SENT

The truth about Michael arrived in a sealed evidence envelope.

Investigators had recovered documents from Daniel Cross's storage unit.

Among them was a letter.

Written by my husband.

Dated three days before his death.

Addressed to me.

I sat in Elena's office holding it.

My hands shook.

“Do you want me to stay?” she asked.

I nodded.

Then opened the envelope.

Michael's handwriting filled the page.

Grace,

If you're reading this, something has gone terribly wrong.

I found records showing that Bellamy Maritime and several Moretti-controlled companies are moving money through false shipping contracts.

I tried to report it internally.

They told me to stop asking questions.

I can't.

I know you're pregnant.

I know you're scared.

I'm scared too.

But I need you to know that everything I've done was to protect you and our child.

If I don't come home, please don't blame yourself.

Tell our baby I loved them before I ever saw their face.

And please, Grace, keep living.

I couldn't read the final lines.

My vision blurred.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

For years, I had wondered whether Michael had been afraid.

Whether he knew what was coming.

Whether he regretted trying to expose the truth.

Now I knew.

He had been afraid.

But he had kept going.

The investigation concluded that Michael's death had been connected to the financial scheme.

Several people faced charges.

Salvatore was returned to the United States through legal proceedings.

The case moved slowly.

There were hearings.

Evidence reviews.

Witness testimony.

But the truth was finally being examined.

That evening, I sat beside Lily on her bed.

She held her stuffed dinosaur.

“Mommy?”

“Yes?”

“Was Daddy nice?”

My heart tightened.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

“Did he love me?”

I smiled through tears.

“Very much.”

She frowned.

“But he never met me.”

I took her hand.

“He loved you before you were born.”

Lily considered.

Then smiled.

“Like a surprise?”

I laughed softly.

“Yes.”

“Best surprise?”

I kissed her forehead.

“The very best.”

Later, Dominic found me in the garden.

I was crying.

He didn't ask me to stop.

Didn't tell me to be strong.

He simply sat beside me.

After a while, I leaned against his shoulder.

He remained still.

Then gently took my hand.

May you like

For the first time in years, I allowed myself to grieve Michael without feeling that grief would swallow me.

And for the first time, I began to understand that loving someone new wouldn't erase the man I had lost.
