Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT ETHAN DISAPPEARED

Ethan vanished on a Thursday afternoon.

He had been playing in the garden with Lily.

Mrs. Whitcomb was supervising.

Security cameras showed the children near the fountain.

Then a delivery van entered through the service gate.

The driver presented authorized paperwork.

A guard opened the gate.

Three minutes later, Ethan was gone.

Lily was found crying behind a hedge.

When I reached her, she threw herself into my arms.

“Mommy!”

I held her tightly.

“Where's Ethan?”

She sobbed.

“Bad man took him.”

My stomach dropped.

“Which bad man?”

She pointed toward the gate.

“Blue hands.”

Dominic arrived moments later.

He looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“Is she hurt?”

“No.”

He knelt.

“Lily, sweetheart, can you tell me what happened?”

She wiped her eyes.

“Man said Ethan's daddy needed him.”

Dominic went still.

“Did Ethan go with him?”

She shook her head.

“He said no.”

My heart broke.

Lily continued.

“Then man picked him up.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

For one terrible second, I thought he might collapse.

Then he stood.

“Call the police.”

Vincent nodded.

“Already done.”

Dominic looked toward the gate.

“Find my son.”

The investigation moved quickly.

Traffic cameras identified the van.

Its registration was false.

But a nearby toll camera captured a partial plate number.

Authorities traced the vehicle toward an industrial area outside the city.

Then Dominic received a video.

Ethan sat in a dark room.

His hands were tied loosely in front of him.

He was crying.

A voice spoke off camera.

“Bring the ledger.”

Dominic stared.

Then another voice added, “And bring Grace Bennett.”

I felt the room tilt.

They wanted me.

Not just the notebook.

Me.

Dominic turned toward me.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“You're not going.”

I stared.

“That's my decision.”

His face tightened.

“Grace—”

“I know it's dangerous.”

He stepped closer.

“They'll kill you.”

I looked at the screen.

Ethan was crying.

Eight years old.

Terrified.

I swallowed.

“Then we need a plan that doesn't give them what they want.”

Dominic stared.

For a moment, I saw the old instinct in him.

To command.

To control.

To decide.

Then he took a breath.

“You're right.”

He turned toward the investigators.

“Tell us what you need.”

The rescue operation took place before dawn.

Authorities located the building.

Negotiators maintained contact.

A tactical team entered after confirming Ethan's position.

The child was rescued alive.

The man who abducted him was arrested.

His name was Daniel Cross.

The same man Lily had seen near the cake.

When Ethan returned home, Dominic ran toward him.

He dropped to his knees.

Pulled his son into his arms.

And cried.

Not quietly.

Not with restraint.

He cried like a father who had nearly lost everything.

Ethan clung to him.

“Daddy?”

“Yes, buddy?”

“Are you mad at me?”

Dominic pulled back.

His face crumpled.

“No.”

Ethan whispered, “I tried to be brave.”

Dominic held him tighter.

“You were.”

Then he kissed his son's forehead.

“You were so brave.”

Lily watched from beside me.

She smiled.

“Ethan home.”

I nodded through tears.

“Yes, baby.”

She hugged her dinosaur.

“Good.”

And for one beautiful moment, the world felt safe again.

But the investigation wasn't over.

Because Daniel Cross had confessed something that changed everything.
