Chapter 15 - THE CHERRY THAT BECAME A PROMISE

Three years after the night Sophie stopped Dante Moretti from eating a poisoned cherry, the Moretti estate hosted another dinner.
But this one was different.
There were no political guests.
No dangerous alliances.
No carefully arranged marriages.
Only family.
Friends.
And people who had earned their places at the table.
Elena wore a white dress.
Dante stood beside her.
Sophie, now nine, carried a small bouquet of white orchids.
The wedding ceremony took place in the garden.
Dante looked at Elena.
“I promise to love you honestly.”
“To respect your choices.”
“And to build a home where no one has to be afraid to speak the truth.”
Elena smiled through tears.
“I promise to stand beside you.”
“To challenge you when you need it.”
“And to love you without losing myself.”
They exchanged rings.
And when the officiant pronounced them married, Sophie cheered louder than anyone.
Later, during the reception, Dante stood beside the dessert table.
A silver bowl of cherries rested near the center.
He picked one up.
A small hand caught his wrist.
Dante froze.
Then looked down.
Sophie grinned.
“Don't eat that cherry!”
For one terrible second, Elena's heart stopped.
Then Sophie burst into laughter.
“I'm kidding!”
Dante stared.
Then he laughed.
A real laugh.
Deep.
Unrestrained.
He lifted Sophie into his arms.
“You nearly gave me a heart attack.”
She giggled.
Elena approached.
“What's happening?”
Dante smiled.
“Your daughter is terrifying.”
Sophie grinned.
“Our daughter.”
Dante looked at Elena.
Then at Sophie.
His eyes filled.
“Yes,” he whispered.
“Our daughter.”
He kissed Sophie's forehead.
Then turned toward Elena.
For years, Dante Moretti had believed his house was a fortress.
A place where power kept danger outside.
But the greatest danger had come from the people he'd trusted.
And the person who saved him had been a little girl in an oversized gray dress.
A child who saw something wrong.
And refused to stay silent.
Now the same house was filled with laughter.
Warmth.
Music.
And a family built not on fear, but on love.
Dante looked at Sophie.
“Do you know what you taught me?”
She tilted her head.
“What?”
He smiled.
“That the smallest voice in the room can tell the biggest truth.”
Sophie grinned.
Then she kissed his cheek.
“That's because you listened, Dad.”

Dante closed his eyes.
And for the first time in his life, the most feared man in New York understood what it meant to feel truly safe.
