Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO CHOSE TO CHANGE

Dante's transformation was not immediate.
He still had enemies.
Still controlled complicated businesses.
Still carried the consequences of decisions he'd made.
But he began changing what he could.
He hired independent auditors.
Replaced compromised security personnel.
Cooperated with legal proceedings.
And began separating legitimate businesses from criminal operations.
Some associates resisted.
Others left.
Dante accepted that.
One evening, Elena found him standing alone in the garden.
He held Sophie's white flower between two fingers.
She smiled.
“She's going to be happy you kept it.”
Dante looked up.
“I pressed it in a book.”
Elena laughed softly.
“Of course you did.”
He studied her.
“May I ask you something?”
She nodded.
“Do you think people can change?”
Elena considered.
“I think people can make different choices.”
Dante nodded.
She continued.
“But they have to keep making them.”
He smiled faintly.
“Sounds exhausting.”
Elena laughed.
“It is.”
They stood together beneath the trees.
Then Dante said:
“I've been thinking about what you told me.”
Elena looked at him.
“What?”
“That you wanted a safe place to work.”
He paused.
“I can't undo what happened.”
She nodded.
“But I can make sure the people working here have real protections.”
Elena studied him.
“Then do it,” she said.
Dante smiled.
May you like
And for the first time, he realized he didn't need her admiration.
He needed to become someone who deserved it.
