Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH ABOUT LORENZO

The investigation into Lorenzo's death took months.

Medical records were reviewed.

Financial transactions were examined.

Witnesses were interviewed.

Eventually, investigators uncovered evidence suggesting Victor Romano had helped conceal suspicious circumstances surrounding Lorenzo's final illness.

The case was complicated.

Some evidence had been lost.

Some witnesses were reluctant to speak.

But the pattern of payments and communications raised serious questions.

Dante learned that Lorenzo had been investigating fraudulent transactions involving Victor and Carlo Columbo before his death.

His brother had planned to remove Victor from his position.

He had also intended to expose the financial scheme.

Then he died.

Dante sat in his office holding Lorenzo's final handwritten notes.

At the bottom of one page were four words:

Dante must be warned.

His eyes filled.

For six months, he'd believed Lorenzo died angry with him.

Their final conversation had been an argument.

Dante had accused his brother of refusing to trust him.

Lorenzo had walked away.

Now Dante understood.

His brother had been trying to protect him.

He closed the notebook.

Then he called Francesca.

“I found something.”

She listened.

Dante's voice broke.

“He was trying to warn me.”

Francesca began crying.

For the first time since Lorenzo's death, they grieved together without pretending the past had been simple.

And Dante made a decision.

He would not honor his brother by continuing the same cycle of secrecy and fear.

He would honor him by bringing the truth into the open.
