Chapter 9 - NATALIE’S LAST MESSAGE

June waited two years before showing the twins the entire video.

They were nine.

A therapist helped.

Natalie appeared on the screen.

She smiled first.

That surprised them.

Most surviving clips showed fear.

But this one started differently.

“Hi, my girls.”

Maya immediately cried.

Elena held her hand.

Natalie talked about ordinary things.

Maya hating peas.

Elena pretending not to like bedtime stories.

Their matching socks.

Then:

“If you are older when you see this, I want you to know something.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“None of what adults do to each other is your responsibility.”

Elena began crying too.

That sentence was for her.

Even though Natalie recorded it before Elena became Maya’s protector.

Somehow she knew.

Then:

“You are sisters, not shields.”

June covered her mouth.

The therapist paused the video.

Elena whispered:

“She knew.”

Maybe.

Or maybe good mothers understand how children try to carry what should belong to adults.

The final message:

“Be kind to each other. Tell the truth. And if someone makes you afraid to ask what medicine is, what money is for, where you are going, or why a door is locked—tell someone.”

Maya looked at June.

“I told Elena.”

“Yes.”

“Elena told the police.”

“Yes.”

Elena shook her head.

“We both went.”

Correct.

Not one hero.
