Chapter 8 - THE HOUSE WITH YELLOW CURTAINS

Elena and Maya moved in with June.

Not permanently at first.

A rental house near their school.

Yellow curtains.

Two bedrooms upstairs.

A backyard.

No cameras in bedrooms.

No locked medicine cabinet except standard child safety.

No father checking pockets.

The first month, Maya hid food under her pillow.

June discovered granola bars.

She did not scold her.

She placed a snack basket in both girls’ rooms.

“Food doesn't disappear here.”

That became a family phrase.

---

Maya hated medicine.

Even antibiotics.

She cried during a simple ear infection.

June sat beside her.

The doctor explained every dose.

Showed the bottle.

Let Maya smell it.

Choice where possible.

Transparency always.

Trust returned slowly.

---

Elena became controlling in a different way.

She wanted to know where Maya was constantly.

At school.

Playground.

Bathroom.

Anywhere.

She had protected her sister for too long.

Therapy helped her learn that loving Maya did not require watching every second.

That was hard.

Children who become protectors too early often struggle to stop.

---

Garrison visited once.

Off duty.

He brought two stuffed bears.

Elena asked:

“Why did you believe us?”

He sat on the porch.

“I didn't know if every detail was correct.”

She frowned.

“Then you didn't believe us?”

“I believed you were asking for help.”

She thought.

That distinction mattered.

He continued:

“I didn't need you to prove everything before I kept you safe long enough for adults to investigate.”

May you like

Elena nodded.

Years later, she would remember that sentence more than the locked door.
