Chapter 9 - THE DAY MIA DISAPPEARED

The kidnapping happened on a Tuesday afternoon.
Not through violence.
Not through a broken gate.
But through deception.
A woman arrived at Mia's preschool carrying forged identification and documents claiming she was an authorized family representative.
The school contacted Elena to verify the request.
But before Elena could respond, the woman had already persuaded a temporary staff member to release Mia.
By the time the mistake was discovered, the vehicle was gone.
Elena collapsed when she heard.
Lorenzo caught her.
“Where is she?”
His voice was terrifyingly calm.
Police were notified immediately.
The school's security footage was preserved.
Investigators traced the vehicle through traffic cameras.
Hours passed.
Then a call came.
Vittorio.
He demanded the evidence.
All of it.
In exchange for Mia.
Elena sobbed.
“Please. She's only three.”
Vittorio's voice was cold.
“Then don't make this difficult.”
Lorenzo took the phone.
“Listen carefully.”
Vittorio laughed.
“The great Lorenzo Duca.”
Lorenzo's voice remained steady.
“The police are involved. Your best chance is to return the child unharmed.”
Vittorio ended the call.
Elena looked at Lorenzo.
“What if he hurts her?”
Lorenzo knelt beside her.
“We're going to do everything we can to bring her home.”
The next hours were unbearable.
Police coordinated the search.
Investigators followed leads from the vehicle and communications.
Lorenzo cooperated fully.
Then a breakthrough came.
A traffic camera captured the vehicle entering an industrial district near the coast.
A witness reported seeing a little girl carrying a stuffed rabbit.
Police located the building.
They established a perimeter.
And negotiated for the child's safe release.
Elena waited nearby with a crisis counselor.
Lorenzo stood beside her.
Neither spoke.
Then the doors opened.
A police officer emerged carrying Mia.
She was crying.
But alive.
Elena ran toward her.
“Mia!”
The little girl reached for her mother.
“Mama!”
Elena held her so tightly that Mia squeaked.
Then she looked over Elena's shoulder.
“Uncle Lorenzo?”
He stepped forward.
Mia reached for him.
Lorenzo took her into his arms.
She buried her face against his neck.
“I was scared.”
His eyes filled.
“I know, little star.”
She whispered, “I wanted Biscuit.”
Lorenzo closed his eyes.
“He's waiting.”
That night, Mia fell asleep between Elena and Biscuit.
Lorenzo sat outside her room.

He remained there until morning.
Because after fifteen years of believing he had failed to protect his brother, he had finally helped bring someone home.
