Chapter 15 - THE PUPPY WHO FOUND A FAMILY

Five years after the morning beneath the fig tree, Lorenzo Duca stood in the garden of a small animal rescue center.

The building was new.

Bright.

Filled with volunteers.

Elena stood beside him.

Mia, now eight, held Biscuit's leash.

The dog had grown older.

His golden fur had darkened.

But his eyes were still the same.

The rescue center had been Mia's idea.

She wanted a place where abandoned animals could be fed, treated, and adopted.

Lorenzo had helped fund it through a properly governed charitable organization.

Elena helped coordinate community volunteers.

Mia insisted on choosing the name.

THE SECOND CHANCE ANIMAL HOUSE.

At the opening ceremony, Mia stepped onto a small wooden platform.

She held a microphone with both hands.

“Hello.”

The crowd smiled.

“My name is Mia.”

She looked at Biscuit.

“When I was three, I found a puppy.”

She paused.

“He was hungry.”

The audience grew quiet.

“Nobody wanted to keep him.”

She looked toward Lorenzo.

“Except my papa.”

Lorenzo smiled.

His eyes filled.

Mia continued.

“My papa said no at first.”

The crowd laughed.

“But then he said yes.”

She smiled.

“And Biscuit got a home.”

She looked around the rescue center.

“I think everybody should get a second chance.”

Applause filled the garden.

Later, Lorenzo knelt beside Mia.

“I'm proud of you, little star.”

She smiled.

“Thank you, Papa.”

He looked at Biscuit.

The dog wagged his tail.

Lorenzo laughed softly.

“You caused a lot of trouble.”

Biscuit licked his hand.

Elena joined them.

She slipped her arm around Lorenzo's waist.

“Happy?” she asked.

He looked at his wife.

His daughter.

The dog.

The garden filled with people and animals who had been given another chance.

Then he smiled.

“More than I ever thought possible.”

Mia tugged his sleeve.

“Papa?”

“Yes?”

“Can we keep another puppy?”

Lorenzo stared at her.

Elena laughed.

Biscuit barked.

He sighed.

“How many?”

Mia grinned.

“Just one.”

Lorenzo looked at Elena.

She raised an eyebrow.

He looked back at Mia.

Then smiled.

“We'll negotiate.”

And beneath the warm Italian sun, the man who once believed he needed nobody finally understood the greatest truth of his life.

He had not rescued a puppy.

He had not rescued a frightened mother.

May you like

He had not even rescued a little girl.

They had rescued him.
