Chapter 10 - THE TRIAL THAT ENDED AN EMPIRE

Vittorio Bellini was arrested.
The investigation expanded to include allegations of kidnapping, financial crimes, coercion, and conspiracy.
Carlo Duca faced separate scrutiny over his historical activities.
Lorenzo made a decision that shocked his associates.
He began dismantling the criminal operations he had inherited.
The process was not simple.
It required cooperation with legal authorities.
Independent financial oversight.
And the difficult separation of legitimate businesses from unlawful networks.
Several associates abandoned him.
Others threatened him.
Some tried to persuade him to return to the old ways.
Lorenzo refused.
One evening, Elena found him sitting in the library.
He looked exhausted.
“Bad day?”
He smiled faintly.
“Very.”
She sat beside him.
“Do you regret it?”
He thought.
“No.”
Elena took his hand.
“Then keep going.”
He looked at her.
“You make it sound easy.”
She shook her head.
“It isn't.”
For a moment, they sat quietly.
Then Lorenzo said, “Elena.”
She looked up.
“Yes?”
“I think I'm falling in love with you.”
Her heart stopped.
He continued.
“I know this is complicated. I know you work here. I know you've been through more than anyone should.”
Elena looked at him.
Then whispered, “I think I'm falling in love with you too.”
He smiled.
But he didn't kiss her.
Not yet.
Instead, he said, “Then let's do this properly.”
Over the following months, Elena left her housekeeping position and began training for a career in early childhood education.
She moved into an independent apartment with Mia.
Lorenzo supported her decision without trying to control it.

When he finally asked her on a date, she said yes.
And for the first time, their relationship began without fear, obligation, or dependence.
