Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT RAFAEL CAME BACK
Rafael learned that Marco had returned.
He reacted quickly.
Too quickly.
He contacted several associates, attempted to move money, and tried to leave the country.
Investigators had already begun examining the financial records and evidence connected to the hidden passages.
Before Rafael could disappear, he came to the mansion.
He arrived after midnight.
Alone.
Or so he claimed.
Dante met him in the study.
Luca remained nearby.
Rafael looked exhausted.
"You've made a mistake."
Dante stared.
"Have I?"
"Marco is lying."
Dante said nothing.
Rafael continued.
"He's always been jealous of you."
Dante looked toward the fireplace.
Then back at his cousin.
"Eleven years."
Rafael swallowed.
"What?"
"You let me believe my brother was dead for eleven years."
Rafael's expression hardened.
"You don't understand what was at stake."
Dante leaned forward.
"Then explain it."
Rafael began talking about money.
Control.
Loyalty.
The need to protect the family.
Dante listened.
Then said:
"You keep saying family."
Rafael stared.
"But you used my mother's trust, my brother's life, and a five-year-old child's fear to protect yourself."
Rafael looked away.
Dante continued.
"That's not family."
Rafael suddenly reached inside his jacket.
Luca reacted immediately.
Security intervened before anyone was harmed.
Rafael was detained and turned over to law enforcement.
The confrontation ended without bloodshed.
But Dante felt no triumph.
Later, he walked upstairs.
Sophie was asleep.
Bruno lay beside her bed.
Elena sat in a chair nearby.
Dante stopped at the doorway.
Elena looked up.
"Is it over?"
He nodded.
"For tonight."
She stood.
"Thank you."
Dante shook his head.
"I should have listened sooner."
Elena studied him.
Then said:
"You listened when it mattered."
Dante looked toward Sophie.
The little girl slept peacefully.
No knocking.
No footsteps.
May you like
No fear.
For the first time in weeks, the house was quiet.
