Chapter 13 - THE PRICE OF LEAVING THE OLD LIFE

Rafael's case continued through the courts.

The evidence supported charges connected to financial fraud, threats, and the attack on Marco.

Dante cooperated with investigators.

He also began separating his legitimate businesses from criminal operations.

The process was difficult.

There were legal consequences.

Financial losses.

And people who did not want him to change.

Dante accepted that leaving the old life required more than making promises.

It required accountability.

Marco supported him.

The brothers spent long evenings talking.

Sometimes they argued.

Sometimes they laughed.

Sometimes they sat in silence, grieving the years they'd lost.

Elena watched Dante struggle with guilt.

One evening, she found him sitting alone in the garden.

"What's wrong?"

He looked up.

"I keep thinking about the people I hurt."

She sat beside him.

Dante continued.

"I spent years believing fear was the only thing that kept people loyal."

Elena listened.

"And then a five-year-old walked into my study and asked to borrow my dog."

He smiled sadly.

"She trusted me before I deserved it."

Elena shook her head.

"She trusted Bruno."

Dante laughed.

"Fair."

Elena took his hand.

"Trust isn't something you win once. It's something you keep earning."

Dante nodded.

He looked toward the house.

"I want to be better."

Elena smiled.

"Then keep choosing better."

Months passed.

Dante continued cooperating with legal authorities and restructuring his life.

He sold several properties connected to his former operations.

He invested in legitimate community projects through independently managed organizations.

And slowly, the mansion became less like a fortress.

More like a home.
