Chapter 11 - THE QUESTION HE WAS AFRAID TO ASK

Dante began looking forward to Elena's company.
He noticed when she entered a room.
He remembered things she said.
He found himself asking about her classes.
But he also understood the imbalance between them.
He was her employer.
He owned the house where she lived.
He controlled resources she depended on.
So he did not pursue her while that relationship remained unchanged.
Instead, he helped arrange a transition.
Elena was offered a position as an assistant teacher at a community education center.
She accepted.
Dante provided a written reference based on her work and character.
Elena moved with Sophie into a small apartment nearby.
The move was emotional.
Sophie cried because she would miss Bruno.
Dante promised the dog could visit.
After Elena settled into her new job, Dante asked whether she would meet him for coffee.
She smiled.
"Coffee?"
He nodded.
"Just coffee."
They met at a quiet café.
No security entourage.
No expensive restaurant.
No expectations.
Elena wore a blue sweater.
Dante wore a simple gray coat.
They talked for two hours.
At the end, Dante looked nervous.
Elena noticed.
"What's wrong?"
He smiled faintly.
"I'm not very good at this."
"At coffee?"
"At asking for things I can't command."
Elena laughed.
Dante took a breath.
"Would you have dinner with me?"
Elena looked at him.
For a moment, she thought about everything that had happened.
The knocking.
The notebook.
The fear.
The man who had once seemed untouchable.
Then she smiled.
"Yes."
Dante exhaled.
Elena laughed.
"You look relieved."
He smiled.
May you like
"I am."
And for the first time in years, Dante Moretti felt nervous about something that had nothing to do with power.
