Chapter 7 - The Trap at the Memorial Gala"Edward... please..." Victoria sobbed, her mascara running in black streaks down her cheeks. "It was an accident! I only wanted the brakes to slip so she would have a minor scare! I wanted her to see that you were working too much and couldn't protect her! I never wanted her to die!"

"You stood on the overpass and watched her car roll over twice, Victoria," I said, my voice dropping into a register of absolute death. "My sons saw you smiling."

I released her wrist with utter disgust.

Detective Marcus Vance of Westchester County stepped forward, unholstering heavy steel transport handcuffs.

"Victoria Vance," Detective Vance declared loudly. "Under New York State Penal Code § 125.25, you are under arrest for Murder in the Second Degree, Conspiracy to Commit Capital Homicide, and Two Counts of Attempted Murder of a Minor."

CLACK.

The cold steel cuffs snapped shut around her wrists.

"Edward! Don't do this!" Victoria shrieked, thrashing against the officers as they dragged her across the marble foyer toward the waiting police cruisers outside. "My father will ruin your company! You'll never survive this!"

"Your father's logistics company was bought out by Morrison Dynamics forty minutes ago, Victoria," Julian Hayes stated coldly from the doorway. "Every asset your family owns has been placed under federal receivership."

The heavy oak front doors closed behind her, cutting off her pathetic wails forever.

The house was silent once more.

The poison that had choked our family for over a year had finally been purged into the light.
