Chapter 9 - The Scent of Lavender and Truth

The penthouse fell into a profound, sacred silence.

Julian turned to Elena, pulling her into an embrace so tight, so full of four years of desperate longing, that neither of them could breathe. They wept together on the dining room floor, letting the tears wash away the blood, fire, and lies of the past.

A soft patter of small bare feet sounded from the hallway.

Julian and Elena looked up.

Standing in the archway in their matching flannel pajamas were Leo and Theo, holding their stuffed bears.

Elena knelt down on the floor, opening her arms wide, tears streaming down her face.

"Leo... Theo..." she whispered softly.

Leo looked at her face without the glasses, looked at her eyes, and then looked at Julian, who was nodding with a broad, tearful smile.

"Mommy?" Leo asked, his little voice crystal clear.

Elena began to hum the soft, sweet melody:

“Two little heartbeats, one soul made of light...

Mama is holding you through the long night.”

Theo dropped his bear and sprinted across the floor, followed closely by Leo. Both boys threw themselves into Elena’s arms, burying their faces into her neck, sobbing with pure, unadulterated joy.

"Mommy! Mommy's back!" they cried together, their voices filling the grand penthouse with the sweetest music on earth.

Julian knelt beside them, wrapping his massive arms around his wife and his sons, completing the circle that evil had tried so desperately to break.
