Chapter 1 - The Song in the Hallway

Billionaire CEO Julian Sterling walked into his penthouse after an unexpected flight home, expecting quiet luxury. Instead, the scene in the hallway made his blood run cold.

His four-year-old twin sons—boys who had barely spoken a word since their traumatic birth—were wrapped tightly around the waist of the quiet new maid, burying their faces into her apron and sobbing uncontrollably.

His wife, Victoria, stood over them trembling with rage.

"Get your hands off my children!" she hissed, pointing a manicured finger toward the front door. "Fire her right now, Julian! She’s just a hired maid trying to play mother!"

Julian stepped forward to pull his boys away, but as he reached down, little Leo looked up with tear-streaked eyes and whispered words that instantly stopped Julian's heart:

"No, Daddy... don't let her leave. She’s more like Mommy than she is. She sings us the secret song."

The grand hallway went dead silent.

Victoria’s face drained completely of color.

The melody the maid had been humming wasn’t on the radio, and it wasn’t in any nursery rhyme book. It was an unreleased lullaby written by Julian’s first love—Elena—a woman declared dead four years ago in the very hospital where his twins were born.

Clara, the maid, kept her head bowed. A pair of oversized tortoiseshell glasses covered half her face, and a modest silk scarf concealed the faint, jagged burn scar running along her jawline. Her hands trembled as she gently stroked Theo’s curly brown hair.

"Clara," Julian’s voice dropped into a dangerous, razor-sharp whisper. "Where did you hear that song?"

"I... I just heard it in my dreams, Mr. Sterling," Clara stammered softly, her voice muffled and raspy, as though her vocal cords had once been scarred by smoke or trauma. "The children were crying from night terrors. It was the only tune that calmed their breathing."

Victoria lunged forward, grabbing Clara’s shoulder to tear her away from the boys. "She's a lunatic! She's probably a stalker who dug through Elena's old belongings! I want her out on the street this instant, Julian, or I'm calling the police!"

"Silence!" Julian roared.

The sheer authority in his voice echoed against the marble walls, freezing Victoria in her tracks.

Theo, who had never let anyone other than his twin touch him, tightened his little arms around Clara’s waist and whispered for the very first time in his life: "Please... Mama Clara stays."

Julian stared at his two sons, his chest heaving with an overwhelming surge of emotion, suspicion, and grief.

"Victoria, go to the master suite," Julian ordered without looking at his wife. "Clara stays in the nursery tonight. We will settle this in the morning."
