Chapter 7 - THE WIFE WHO VANISHED

Vivian Vance had never been the woman Julian thought she was.

Their marriage had begun with passion.

Then deteriorated beneath secrets, power struggles, and years of emotional distance.

Julian believed Vivian had become cold.

Ambitious.

Uninterested in their family.

He had never imagined she was investigating his brother.

The former Northstar employee, a nurse named Lydia Grant, explained.

Vivian had discovered suspicious payments from Vance-controlled accounts.

She'd asked questions.

Nathaniel had warned her to stop.

Instead, she visited one of the facilities.

There, she'd met several children whose records didn't match their circumstances.

One was a little girl named Maisie.

Elena stopped breathing.

“Was she alive?”

Lydia looked at her.

“Yes.”

Elena began crying.

“Where is she?”

Lydia's expression changed.

“I don't know where she is now.”

Elena covered her mouth.

“But she was alive three weeks ago?”

Lydia nodded.

“Yes.”

Julian stared.

“And Vivian?”

Lydia swallowed.

“She was trying to get evidence.”

“Why didn't she tell me?”

Lydia hesitated.

“Because she believed someone in your security team was reporting to Nathaniel.”

Julian felt cold.

Gabriel Mercer.

His most trusted man.

Lydia continued.

Vivian had arranged to meet a federal investigator.

She planned to bring Clara and evidence from Northstar.

But the convoy was attacked before she reached the meeting point.

Vivian disappeared.

Clara survived.

And the evidence vanished.

Julian sat in silence.

For weeks, he'd believed his estranged wife had abandoned their daughter.

Now he learned she'd been trying to protect children.

Including Maisie.

Including Clara.

That evening, Julian went to Clara's room.

She sat beside Elena.

He knelt.

“Sweetheart.”

Clara looked up.

“Daddy?”

His eyes filled.

“Did Mommy tell you something before the accident?”

Clara nodded.

“What did she say?”

The girl looked at Elena.

Then whispered:

“Find the lady with the yellow coat.”

Elena froze.

Julian stared.

“Who?”

Clara pointed at Elena.

“Her.”

Elena's heart hammered.

She had worn her yellow raincoat the day she first met Clara.

But Vivian had disappeared three weeks earlier.

How could she have known?

Then Elena remembered.

Six months ago, after the farmhouse fire, a woman had approached her outside the hospital.

A stranger.

Dark hair.

Elegant coat.

She had asked about Maisie.

Offered condolences.

And quietly said:

“Don't stop asking questions.”

Elena had been too devastated to remember her name.

Now she knew.

Vivian Vance.

Julian looked at Elena.

His voice broke.

“My wife knew you.”

Elena nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“And she wanted Clara to find you.”

Elena looked down at the little girl.

Clara smiled faintly.

“Mommy said you help lost birds.”

Elena began crying.

Because for the first time, she understood.

Vivian hadn't simply vanished.

May you like

She had left a trail.

And Clara was carrying the pieces.
