Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO DIDN'T NEED SAVING

Elena planned to leave Blackwood Estate.

Her daughter was safe.

The investigation was moving forward.

And the groundskeeping job had never been meant to become permanent.

She wanted a home of her own.

A quiet place.

A garden.

A future where Maisie could grow without fear.

Julian found her packing tools in the greenhouse.

“Leaving?”

Elena nodded.

“Soon.”

He looked down.

“Clara will miss you.”

Elena smiled sadly.

“I'll miss her too.”

Julian hesitated.

“And I will.”

Elena looked up.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then she said:

“Julian.”

“Yes?”

“I didn't come here looking for you.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“I came because I couldn't bear the silence in my own house.”

His expression softened.

“And you helped my daughter.”

Elena looked down.

“She helped me too.”

Julian stepped closer.

“I'd like to see you again.”

Elena smiled faintly.

“You see me every day.”

“Not as your employer.”

She looked at him.

“Then what?”

He hesitated.

“As a man who wants to know you.”

Elena's heart skipped.

She considered.

Julian was powerful.

Complicated.

And still connected to a world she didn't fully understand.

She had survived too much to surrender her independence.

“I'm not interested in becoming another person you control.”

Julian nodded.

“Good.”

She looked surprised.

He smiled sadly.

“I've had enough of being that man.”

Elena studied him.

Then said:

“If we ever try anything, it has to be slow.”

Julian nodded.

“Slow.”

“And honest.”

“Yes.”

“And Maisie comes first.”

“Of course.”

She smiled.

“Clara too.”

Julian's expression softened.

“Always.”

Elena left Blackwood Estate two weeks later.

She rented a small cottage near a community garden.

Maisie loved it.

They planted sunflowers.

Bought a dog.

Painted the kitchen yellow.

And began building a life that belonged to them.

Julian visited occasionally.

Not with expensive gifts.

Not with demands.

With flowers.

Books.

And sometimes a bag of terrible homemade cookies.

May you like

Maisie adored the cookies.

Elena suspected she liked the effort more than the taste.
