Chapter 13 - THE FIRST KISS AFTER THE STORM

A year passed.

The criminal proceedings continued.

Nathaniel and several associates faced serious charges.

The evidence from Northstar helped authorities locate additional families and reunite children where appropriate.

The investigation also exposed financial misconduct connected to Vance-controlled companies.

Julian cooperated.

He began restructuring his businesses.

Sold assets.

Closed operations.

And separated himself from criminal activities.

The process was difficult.

But he continued.

Meanwhile, Elena returned to landscape design.

She'd studied horticulture before becoming a mother.

Now she began taking small projects.

Gardens.

Courtyards.

Community spaces.

Her work grew.

Clients recommended her.

She hired an assistant.

Then another.

And slowly, Elena Ross became known for creating beautiful spaces where people could breathe.

Julian remained part of her life.

They had dinner.

Walked through gardens.

Talked about their daughters.

Shared stories.

Laughed.

Sometimes cried.

One evening, Julian visited Elena's cottage.

Maisie and Clara were asleep after a long afternoon of playing.

Elena stood on the porch.

The garden smelled of roses.

Julian stepped beside her.

“Beautiful evening.”

She smiled.

“Yes.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Julian said:

“Elena.”

She turned.

“Yes?”

“May I kiss you?”

She laughed softly.

“You're asking?”

He smiled.

“I'm learning.”

She stepped closer.

“Yes.”

The kiss was gentle.

Warm.

Unhurried.

When they separated, Elena smiled.

“Not bad.”

Julian laughed.

“High praise.”

Their relationship grew slowly.

They didn't rush.

Didn't make promises they couldn't keep.

They spoke honestly.

Respected boundaries.

And allowed their daughters to adjust at their own pace.

One evening, Clara asked Julian:

“Daddy, do you love Ellie?”

Julian nearly dropped his coffee.

He looked at his daughter.

“Why do you ask?”

Clara smiled.

“Because you smile when she comes.”

Julian laughed.

“Do I?”

She nodded.

“Lots.”

He looked toward the garden.

Then smiled.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

May you like

He swallowed.

“I think I do.”
