Chapter 4 - The Confrontation in the Dark

CRACK.

The steel door rebounded against the concrete wall with the force of an explosion.

“Police! Drop the weapon! Hands where I can see them!” Miller roared, training his tactical flashlight and firearm directly on the suspect’s chest.

The man spun around, shielding his eyes from the blinding beam, his face contorted in vicious surprise. It was Marcus Vance—Claire’s ex-husband, against whom she had filed three emergency restraining orders over the preceding eighteen months.

“Get the hell out of here!” Marcus snarled, raising the iron crowbar defensively. “This is a family matter!”

“Drop the weapon right now!” Hayes commanded, sweeping around from the left flank.

Marcus made a desperate lunge toward the table to grab the hard drive. Miller didn't hesitate. He stepped inside the arc of the crowbar, drove his forearm into Marcus’s chest, and executed a sweeping leg takedown.

Marcus crashed hard against the concrete floor, the crowbar clattering away into the dark. Hayes dropped his knee into Marcus’s shoulder blade, pinning his arm and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp, resonant CLICK.

“Suspect in custody,” Hayes spoke into his shoulder radio. “Victim located. Alive and conscious. Send medics down to the basement immediately.”

Miller immediately knelt beside Claire. Using his tactical shears, he carefully sliced the plastic bindings from her wrists and removed the tape from her face.

Claire collapsed against his shoulder, weeping in ragged, gasping sobs.

“My babies...” she choked out, clutching Miller’s uniform. “Lily... Noah... are they okay? Did he go upstairs?”

“Your children are safe, ma'am,” Miller said gently, his voice softening. “Your daughter called 911. She followed every single rule you gave her. She saved your life.”
