Chapter 5 - Betrayal in Silk

They reached the threshold of the subterranean vault gallery just as the red status lights shifted to a slow, pulsing amber.
The heavy vault door—a foot-thick slab of reinforced tungsten-carbide—was already halfway open. Inside the brightly lit chamber, two men in tactical gear were rapidly transferring steel lockboxes into heavy ballistic duffel bags.
Standing just outside the vault threshold, calmly typing commands into a military-grade tablet, was not a mercenary.
It was Elena Sterling.
Her emerald silk robe was pristine, a sleek black semi-automatic pistol resting comfortably in a holster strapped over her shoulder. She looked entirely composed, checking her platinum wristwatch with casual detachment.
Claire gasped softly. Roman’s hand instantly settled on her shoulder, keeping her concealed within the shadow of the stone archway.
“Hurry up,” Elena ordered the mercenaries, her voice sharp and devoid of the hysterical panic she had displayed in the rotunda upstairs. “The emergency protocol only blinds Marcus’s local monitors for another four minutes. When the secondary relay trips, I want those bearer bonds and the encrypted cold wallets in the transport van.”
“What about the boss?” one of the mercenaries grunted, slamming a case shut.
“Julian is already at the perimeter,” Elena replied coldly. “Once we have the assets, the mercenary team upstairs will execute Roman, Marcus, and the rest of the domestic staff. By morning, Julian returns as the grieving, long-lost brother surviving a tragic home invasion, claiming the entire family trust as the sole surviving heir.”
“And the maid?” the mercenary asked.
“Shoot her through the head and leave her in the cellar,” Elena said without a flicker of emotion. “She was an unexpected nuisance. The police will believe she was an accomplice who got caught in the crossfire.”
Roman stepped out of the shadows.
“You always did have a terrible eye for legal compliance, Elena,” Roman said, his voice echoing with absolute lethality across the stone vault room.
Elena spun around, her weapon clearing its holster in a split second. But Roman was faster. He raised the 9mm pistol and fired a single, deafening shot.
The bullet struck the concrete an inch from Elena’s designer slippers, showering her legs with sharp stone fragments. The force of the ricochet made her stumble back against the vault jamb, dropping her tablet with a clatter.
The two mercenaries inside the vault instantly dropped their bags and reached for their carbines, but Claire had already moved.
Slipping beneath Roman’s arm, Claire threw her entire body weight against the emergency manual release lever embedded in the outer wall. She slammed the heavy steel switch downward, severing the power bypass wire with a pair of insulated wire cutters she had pulled from the maintenance shaft.
[CRITICAL ALERT: MANUAL LOCKOUT ENGAGED]
The heavy hydraulic system groaned. The massive tungsten-carbide vault door slammed shut with the force of a thunderclap, sealing the two armed mercenaries inside the soundproof, air-tight chamber.
Elena stood stranded in the corridor, her gun trembling in her hand as she stared into the barrel of Roman’s weapon.
“Drop it,” Roman said.
Elena swallowed hard, her arrogant veneer shattering into jagged pieces. She slowly opened her fingers, letting the pistol clatter to the stone floor.
“Roman... listen to me,” Elena stammered, raising her hands, her eyes darting frantically toward the darkened hallway behind him. “You don't understand what’s happening. Julian... Julian didn't drown. He was taken by a syndicate in Europe. He forced me to do this! He threatened my family!”
“Don't insult my intelligence,” Roman said, stepping closer until the cold steel of his gun pressed directly against the center of her forehead. “You didn't just help him tonight. You authorized the fake maintenance contract that blocked Nathaniel Bennett’s warnings fourteen months ago. You signed the kill order for Claire’s father.”
Elena looked past Roman, her eyes locking onto Claire. A realization dawned on her face, twisted with sudden venom. “Bennett... you’re Nathaniel’s daughter.”
“And you’re going to spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary,” Claire said, her voice trembling with righteous fury.
Elena suddenly laughed, a high, manic sound that echoed off the stone walls. “A penitentiary? You think you’ve won? Look at your watch, Roman. The strike team wasn’t sent to rob the vault. They were sent to clear a path.”
A heavy vibration shook the entire foundation of the manor.

From the upper courtyard, the distinct sound of a helicopter’s rotor blades sliced through the night air, descending rapidly toward the estate grounds.
“Julian is already here,” Elena whispered with a triumphant grin. “And he didn’t come alone.”
