Chapter 9 - MIDNIGHT

Rafael stood.

“Bring the child down.”

Marco pushed Gabriel forward.

Lily followed.

Claire’s entire body wanted to run toward her.

Dante caught her wrist.

Trust.

Marco reached the bottom.

Sophia smiled.

“You finally chose correctly.”

Marco looked at her.

Then punched her.

Everything happened at once.

Gabriel grabbed Lily.

Dante tackled Rafael.

Claire kicked Sophia’s weapon away.

Adrian fired toward Salvatore.

Salvatore dropped.

Security burst through the side doors.

Rafael shouted.

“You idiots! The release!”

11:59:30.

The chapel filled with alarms.

Marco restrained Sophia.

Gabriel carried Lily behind the altar.

Dante pinned Rafael.

Claire ran to her daughter.

“Baby!”

“I’m okay.”

Eleven fifty-nine forty-five.

Rafael laughed.

“You think midnight saves you?”

Dante looked at him.

“Yes.”

“No.”

Rafael’s smile widened.

“Michael’s second archive does not expose me.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

“It exposes Dante.”

Dante went still.

Rafael continued.

“Michael collected everything.”

Claire’s heart pounded.

“Including what?”

“The Moretti family’s operations.”

Dante stared at the clock.

Eleven fifty-nine fifty-five.

If released, Michael’s archive could expose Dante’s past as well.

Federal charges.

Prison.

Everything.

Claire looked at him.

Dante could still stop it.

Five seconds.

Four.

Three.

Rafael smiled.

“Now you understand.”

Dante looked at Claire.

Two.

He could choose himself.

Or truth.

One.

Dante did nothing.

Midnight.

Lily turned four.

Across the world, files released.

Newsrooms received them.

Federal servers received them.

Attorneys received them.

Records exposing Rafael.

Salvatore.

Adrian.

Sophia.

Judges.

Police officers.

Companies.

And Dante Moretti.

Rafael stared in disbelief.

“You let it happen.”

Dante stood.

“Yes.”

“You’ll go to prison.”

“Maybe.”

“You’ll lose everything.”

Dante looked at Claire and Lily.

“No.”

Rafael’s face twisted.

For the first time, the old man looked defeated.

Not because someone had outsmarted him.

Because Dante had refused to play his game.

Rafael’s entire system depended on people protecting themselves.

Dante had chosen not to.

Federal agents entered minutes later.

Dante had invited them.

Rafael was arrested.

Sophia screamed as officers took her.

Adrian tried to escape and failed.

Salvatore survived the gunshot.

He looked at Dante from the floor.

“You betrayed your blood.”

Dante stared at him.

“No.”

He looked toward Gabriel.

Then Claire.

Then Lily.

“I finally understood what blood is supposed to mean.”

Salvatore was taken away.

The aftermath was immediate.

Television networks exploded with coverage.

Financial investigations opened.

Corrupt officials resigned.

Dozens of arrests followed.

The Moretti organization fractured.

Dante voluntarily surrendered evidence about his own conduct.

Claire went with him to the federal building.

“You don’t have to.”

“I know.”

“I may not come home tonight.”

“I know.”

“Or for a long time.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“I know.”

Dante touched her cheek.

Lily stood beside them.

She looked confused.

“Where you going?”

Dante crouched.

“To answer some questions.”

“Did you do bad stuff?”

He looked at Claire.

She didn’t rescue him.

Good.

He looked back at Lily.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought it was how I had to live.”

“Are you sorry?”

“Yes.”

Lily considered this with extraordinary seriousness.

Then hugged him.

“Okay.”

Dante closed his eyes.

Claire watched his face break.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

He held Lily tighter.

“I don’t deserve you.”

Lily whispered:

“You can have my red crayon.”

He laughed through wet eyes.

“Thank you.”

Federal prosecutors spent months reviewing the archive.

Dante had committed crimes.

Financial coercion.

Illegal gambling interests inherited from his father.

Unreported transactions.

Threats.

But Michael’s evidence also showed Dante repeatedly blocking weapons sales, refusing narcotics partnerships and attempting to move Moretti operations toward legitimate businesses.

That did not erase wrongdoing.

Dante refused to pretend it did.

He accepted a plea agreement.

Eighteen months of home confinement.

Five years probation.

Massive forfeiture.

Complete withdrawal from organized crime.

Testimony against Salvatore and Rafael.

The Moretti fortune shrank dramatically.

Dante sold properties.

Businesses.

Cars.

Including the black sedan.

Except the driver-side door.

He had it removed.

Claire stared when he showed her.

“You kept it?”

Red crayon covered the paint.

Houses.

Flowers.

People.

The bad man.

Dante nodded.

“It’s evidence.”

“Of what?”

“That a three-year-old had better instincts than twenty armed men.”

Claire laughed.

Then the smile disappeared.

“What happens now?”

Dante looked around the estate.

Half the staff gone.

Security reduced.

The world outside changed forever.

“I don’t know.”

Claire took his hand.

“Good.”

He frowned.

“Good?”

“For once, nobody has planned it for us.”

Dante looked at her.

She smiled.

May you like

“We get to decide.”
