Chapter 3 - THE WIDOW IN THE VAULT

Dante reached the vault forty seconds too late.
Sophia was gone.
So was the black bag.
Inside it had been banking records, property deeds, account codes, old agreements and one item Dante valued more than money.
A handwritten ledger his father had maintained for thirty years.
Not because it documented crimes.
Because it documented debts.
Favors.
Enemies.
People who could be trusted.
People who could not.
Names that could destroy alliances across three cities if the wrong person obtained them.
Dante looked at the empty compartment.
“Seal every exit.”
Enzo nodded.
“Already done.”
“Vehicles?”
“Blocked.”
“Helicopter?”
“Disabled.”
Marco leaned against the wall.
“She’s still here.”
Gabriel arrived.
“My key was cloned.”
Dante turned.
“You lost it?”
“Someone lifted it last night and returned it this morning.”
“You didn’t notice?”
“No.”
Marco laughed bitterly.
“Excellent security.”
Gabriel nearly hit him.
Dante stepped between them.
“Enough.”
A guard approached.
“Boss. Safe-room request.”
Dante’s face changed.
“Claire?”
“She wants you.”
He was there minutes later.
Claire opened the door herself.
She looked furious.
Not afraid.
That surprised him.
“Sophia came into our bedroom last night.”
Dante stopped.
“What?”
“Lily saw her.”
Claire explained everything.
Sophia.
The drawing.
The photograph.
The torn paper.
Dante listened without interrupting.
Then Lily walked over.
She handed him a folded page.
“I made another.”
Claire looked confused.
“When?”
“Breakfast.”
Dante unfolded it.
More figures.
A blond woman.
A tall man.
A strange symbol beside them.
Three triangles.
Dante’s face hardened.
“Where did you see this?”
Lily pointed.
“On the man’s hand.”
Gabriel looked over Dante’s shoulder.
“Vescari.”
Claire frowned.
“Who?”
Dante did not answer immediately.
The Vescari organization had been an enemy of the Moretti family for almost two decades.
Violent history.
Broken alliances.
Three dead relatives.
Dante’s older brother Luca among them.
Or so Dante had always believed.
Sophia’s husband.
Dante looked toward Gabriel.
“You think she’s working with them?”
Gabriel shook his head.
“I think we’re asking the wrong question again.”
“What?”
“What if she always was?”
Dante went completely still.
Claire watched him.
“Dante?”
He turned away.
If Sophia had been connected to the Vescari family before marrying Luca…
Then Luca’s death might never have been retaliation.
It might have been arranged from inside.
Dante’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Sophia’s voice.
“Hello, Dante.”
His eyes went cold.
“Where are you?”
“Close.”
“Return what you took.”
“You really do sound like your father.”
“What do you want?”
Sophia laughed softly.
“The thing I’ve wanted since I was twenty-one.”
“What?”
“The Moretti name to die without anyone realizing I killed it.”
Dante looked toward Claire.
Sophia continued.
“You always thought violence was your greatest danger.”
“No.”
“No?”
Dante’s gaze settled on Lily.
“Trust.”
Silence.
Sophia sounded almost impressed.
“Maybe the little girl is making you smarter.”
“Leave Claire and Lily out of this.”
“That’s impossible now.”
Dante’s hand tightened around the phone.
“Why?”
“Because everyone has noticed.”
“Noticed what?”
“The way you look at her.”
Claire stopped breathing.
Dante said nothing.
Sophia continued.
“The mighty Dante Moretti lets a maid’s daughter draw flowers on his car and live.”
“This is not about them.”
“Of course it is.”
Sophia’s tone sharpened.
“You’ve spent three years refusing every marriage alliance put in front of you. Then Claire Bennett enters your house, and suddenly you’re eating breakfast in the kitchen instead of your office.”
Claire looked at Dante.
He avoided her eyes.
“You’re attending Lily’s ridiculous tea parties.”
Lily whispered:
“They’re not ridiculous.”
Claire almost smiled.
Sophia continued.
“You had your driver take them to the hospital when Claire had pneumonia. You paid Lily’s preschool tuition anonymously. You think nobody noticed?”
Claire stared at Dante.
“What?”
He looked uncomfortable.
“Not now.”
Sophia laughed.
“You never told her?”
Dante’s jaw tightened.
“Enough.”
“Oh, Dante. You don’t even know the best part.”
“What?”
“I wasn’t trying to kill Claire yesterday.”
Claire frowned.
Sophia continued.
“I was trying to make you believe someone had.”
Dante’s expression changed.
“Why?”
“To force you into lockdown.”
Gabriel understood first.
“The vault.”
Sophia laughed.
“Exactly.”
The bomb had been bait.
Lily’s witnessing Marco had simply complicated things.
Sophia had expected the device to be discovered during departure checks.
Lockdown would trigger Dante to move sensitive materials.
Security concentration would shift.
The vault would become accessible.
Everything had been planned.
Except Lily.
Dante stared at the child.
Three years old.
Red crayon.
Entire conspiracy broken because a little girl drew what she saw.
Sophia sighed.
“Children are inconvenient.”
Dante’s voice became lethal.
“If you go near her again—”
“You’ll what?”
He did not answer.
Sophia whispered:
“You couldn’t save Luca.”
Dante froze.
“You couldn’t save your father.”
His breathing changed.
“You won’t save Claire.”
The call ended.
Dante stood motionless.
Claire saw something she had never seen in him before.
Pain.
Not anger.
Not power.
Pain.
She stepped closer.
“Was Luca murdered?”
Dante stared at the floor.
“My brother died because I sent him to negotiate with the Vescari family.”
“You didn’t know.”
“I should have.”
“Dante—”
“He had a wife.”
He laughed bitterly.
“Sophia cried in my arms at his funeral.”
Claire felt sick.
“If she arranged it…”
“I comforted the person who killed him.”
His voice cracked.
Only slightly.
But Claire heard it.
She touched his sleeve.
Dante looked at her hand.
Then her face.
For one suspended second, neither moved.
Lily interrupted.
“Mr. Dante?”
He crouched.
“Yes?”
“Your car is ugly now.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Dante stared.
Then laughed.
A real laugh.
Short.
Shocked.
Probably the first one Claire had ever heard.
Lily smiled proudly.
“I can fix it.”
“With more crayon?”
“Yes.”
Dante looked at Claire.
“If we survive today, she can have the entire passenger door.”
Claire laughed despite herself.
Then a guard rushed into the room.
“Boss.”
Dante stood.
“What?”
“We found the tunnel.”
“What tunnel?”
“Under the old chapel.”
Dante’s face changed.
The estate chapel had been built by his grandfather.
Nobody had used it in years.
The guard continued.
“Someone opened an underground exit from inside.”
“Sophia?”
“We think so.”
Dante moved toward the door.
The guard stopped him.
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
“We found a body.”
Claire’s stomach turned.
“Who?”
The guard looked at Dante.
“Rosa.”
Claire gasped.
Rosa had been the housekeeper caring for Lily the night before.
The woman who had supposedly lost track of her.
The woman who was supposed to drive Claire and Lily away in the bomb-rigged car.
Dante’s face became stone.
“Where?”
“In the tunnel.”
Claire covered Lily’s ears.
The guard continued.
“She’s alive.”
Claire nearly collapsed with relief.
“But barely.”
Dante moved.
Then the guard added one more sentence.
“She keeps saying the same thing.”
Dante stopped.
“What?”
“That Claire has to run.”
Everyone looked at her.
Claire’s blood went cold.
The guard swallowed.
May you like
“Rosa says Claire Bennett is the reason Sophia came to this estate three years ago.”
